I greatly doubt that 'Ich will mehr als dem Kern verstehen' is a valid phrase in German. I might be mistaken, though. Same goes with 'Mehr oder weniger'. I can't imagine you are wrong. I am trying hard not to "cheat" and only using words I know to get at what I mean. Mayhap I am not ready...

You use 'die deutsche' in sentences like 'Ich lerne die deutsche Sprache'. Otherwise it's a neuter noun.
