Re: Lexember 2021

11th thalp - hammer, mallet This is a neuter thematic noun. Neuter thematics have lost their *-(thematic vowel)(nasal) nominative singular ending and exhibit the bare stem just like any other neuter. I like to think this word is of onomatopoeic origin. It has no parallels in Lihmelinyan or Arculese.

Re: Lexember 2021

Sorry I'm late to the party but I'd been debating whether to use a previously-introduced conlang or use this as an opportunity to introduce a new language like I did last year with Arculese. I've opted for the latter and will be using this Lexember to introduce Tamagic, a heretofore unseen conlang o...

Re: Lexember 2021 - Open to Weekly Theme Suggestions!

^That sounds like a good idea, though for those of us with "medieval" conlangs, we will have to adapt the theme to refer to preindustrial business and household practices. [:)] I tend to focus too much on nouns, so it might be nice to have a verbs-only week (perhaps with a category, like m...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

^Ah, thanks. I do remember reading something about it in Sihler, so I looked it up. He essentially says what you said. "-at- somehow continues -n-". There's a theory that it might have something to do with participle forms in -nt- but the connection between those and the n-stem nouns is no...

For the Ancient Greek noun ὕδωρ (hýdōr) "water", why is the oblique stem ὕδατ- (hýdat-)? Where does that -at- come from?

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I'm studying Latin gerunds. Wictionary https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:Latin_gerunds says: 'The gerund is typically used without an object in Latin. When an object of the gerund is included, the gerundive is used in place of the gerund and given an ending that agrees with the object noun.' ...

Re: What are you listening to/watching?

Been listening to a lot of J-pop. Japanese is still the most euphonic language to me. And I love hearing the alveolar trill in Japanese (rare as it is). Something about it. [:D]

Man, many of you guys are another level from me. The amount of work and detail that goes into making your conlangs and conworlds truly something unique is staggering. Me, I'm just like "here's a conlang that's a lot like IE" and "here's a con-nation that looks kinda like California an...

Re: Extroverts, introverts, dopamine, and conworlding

That sounds about right. I remember now -- you have an a priori word for "young man" in one of your languages that's spelt with FH, to represent a sound found in only one known natlang. Totally! I've known a number of people who thought Kankonia and the Kankonian language were just so awe...

I love the Coptic alphabet! I've been trying to come up with a conlang that uses it. Looks great. [:)]

More Aromanian music. This is quickly becoming my favorite minor Romance language [:D]

It sounds like Romanian meets Italian meets Greek.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

^I was first exposed to Latin in the Catholic church, so for me I still much prefer the sound of "Italianate" Latin. (So sue me for reading "veni vidi vici" as /ve.ni vi.di vi.ʧi/ [xD] ) And that sounds like good advice. The thing is, Arculese is inspired by Italo-Celtic, but isn...

Re: Extroverts, introverts, dopamine, and conworlding

Cool! So you get it too. IIRC, you mostly make a posteriori langs, right? Since Lehola is another galaxy, all of my Leholangs have to be a priori (except LIE, of course). If I were working on an a posteriori conlang, I'd probably be tearing out my long Kurt Cobain hair and beard trying to get it ri...

Oscan has been a major influence on Arculese and in transcriptions of it I see <c> and <k> and I like them both! Decisions, decisions...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

^I thought about that, the meaningless circumflex sometimes used in fantasy languages. It does lend them a more "exotic" aesthetic. It's true that in one language I've been drafting, I have a different use for <c> (to represent /ʧ/) but in this one I have no use for it other than an altern...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Do most of you prefer using <k> as opposed to <c> to represent the /k/ sound in your languages? I've been thinking of using <c> in Arculese, in part because /k/ is pronounced more like /c/ before front vowels, but unfortunately whenever I do this Arculese starts to have, for me, a "Romance"...

I for one think it's awesome [:D] I'm always impressed by intelligence and enjoy hearing about academic and intellectual accomplishments. It has to be more socially acceptable to talk about good things in our lives. It can't just be commiseration all the time.
