Re: Grammatical Function of "Like"
Certainly words like this can change from group to group, but if it is a discourse particle then by nature it must have some sort of pragmatic function agreed on by multiple speakers, otherwise it couldn't be used to facilitate discourse. To say that it is different for every speaker is kind of dodg...

Re: Grammatical Function of "Like"
It can often be used to indicate approximation ("it took like 10 minutes"), exaggeration/hyperbole ("there were like a million people there"), interpretation/perception ("he was like, really mad") and so on. All these uses seem to be extensions of its basic meaning of e...

Re: Strangest-looking word
Himmaswa has so many weird looking words it's hard to choose. Here are a few that sound odd to me for whatever reason: dmortbee - [dmɔ̰˞ːt̚biː] - to be or move horizontally dongbachjdeñge - [dɔŋba(ʧ)ʤdɛɲɡɛ] - prime minister gooaychdee - [ɡuə̯jʧdiː] - whirlpool; eddy jaa'aa - [ja̰ːa̰ː] - yes; very we...

Analogy. I assume you know "knack," which is the word most similar to "knackered."Dormouse559 wrote:Wondered at the fact that I heard "knackered" for the first time and immediately imagined it spelled with a silent k.

Re: What did you accomplish today?
Not to mention the fact that Japanese has a number of case particles that, while not necessarily analyzable as suffixes, still serve the same function as case endings. As for verb endings being auxiliaries, some of them are clearly identifiable as independent verbs that have been compounded, e.g. -(...

Re: Multiple Spellings
This actually seems pretty common in japanese. A single word can often be written with different kanji, often with slight (or not so slight) differences in meaning, although sometimes there is disagreement over what those differences are, and sometimes there doesn't seem to be any difference at all...

In standard Japanese usage, 生 can be pronounced nama , sei , shō , i(k)- , u(m)- , o- , ha- , na- , mu- . There are also over 20 other pronunciations used only in names. There are two words for 'animal' in Japanese: 動物, dōbutsu , which means "move-thing" (actually similar to 'animal', I guess), and 獣 kemono , which means "hair-thing". The word for irony is 皮肉 hiniku , which means "skin-meat". When you get angry or annoyed by someone els...
