Re: Word-Final <r> in Portuguese

My Brazilian Portuguese-speaking friend just doesn't even pronounce word-final /r/ (with the exception of a following word beginning with a vowel). Maybe that's considered non-standard, though.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Do you ever find yourself mispronouncing your own conlang? For me, sometimes this is due to influence from another conlang. When I'm in Arculese mode, I'm inclined to see <g> and think /x/ or /ç/ and I have to remind myself when working with a Lihmelinyan word, that <g> is just /g/ in that language.

Arc. 20th tuguénnā - fem. - mole (burrowing mammal) /tu.xu.'ɛn.naː/ Several Arculese animal names end in -nnā. This ending is unique to Arculese and lacks a Lihmelinyan cognate, but cf. 19th Arc. bléðā - meadow, glade (pronounced the way it's spelled!) I'd been on the fence about <ð> in Arculese, especially since I've been spelling /θ/ as <th> so that's a bit inconsistent, but here it is. This word refers to an open grassy area surrounded by forest or near the water and can be tran...

Re: Lexember 2022

I'm sad I haven't participated in Lexember so far [:(] There's just too much going on in my life right now--but I have been lurking in this thread since it started. But I love vocabulary related to nature, so I'll participate this week at least: 18th Arc. ívūr - gen. ívoros - forest (cf. Lih. éwār )...

Re: What is the newest word in your conlang?

What I've been doing lately is thinking about cognates between Lihmelinyan and Arculese: eagle Lih. elássēr Arc. iláttīr shoulder Lih. érkanan Arc. írkanom pine tree Lih. álgēn Arc. álgif The latter one being the oddest one. -if from Proto Mantic -ens (-ns to -f, regular sound change in Arculese, cf...

Re: Indo-European Naturalistic Conlang?

This is similar to what I've done with my main conlang, Lihmelinyan. Although I only did so with IE grammar, not with the lexicon. But I took the tables I found in Ringe and Sihler (another great resource for IE reconstruction) and had them undergo my own selected sound changes and created grammatic...

Re: If you were to write one novel...

I think mine would read more like a historical novel. My conworld isn't particularly fantasy or sci-fi-oriented like many. It's more modeled after early medieval Europe. Part of the reason I enjoyed ASoIaF so much was its lesser reliance on fantasy and its realistic world-building that made me feel ...

Re: Conlanging Features you Avoid

I guess one thing I avoid is an overly-complex phonology that I myself can't even pronounce. I like the idea of tones, for example, but I doubt I'll ever create a tonal language unless I can really master pronouncing different tones. There's not too much else that I consciously avoid. But it's alway...

Some reptilian words I came up with recently:

Arculese

bántis - snake, serpent
enávos - cobra, viper, adder, type of poisonous snake (which one being referred to varies by dialect) (cf. Lih. hnáwas - water snake)

Re: The Sixth Conversation Thread

the majority of conlangs seem to be largely "unfinished", i.e. not at a point where such translations are possible. Boy is that ever true. I have been falling away from the hobby in recent years and I find that sad, but the ongoing and mammoth task that is conlanging tends to push me away...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Just a little hypothetical I thought of this morning: The Romance languages derive their words for "liver" from Latin ficatum , meaning "fig-stuffed". Evidently there was some kind of medieval dish called iecur ficatum "fig-stuffed liver". The actual word for liver, iec...
