Re: Peripheral Euro features

I think that English and the Romance languages all sharing the same perfect construction consisting of a verb that is roughly shaped like "have" and a past participle is pretty strange, and that similarity is even stronger in Spanish and Italian where the other half of the construction co...

Re: The Sixth Conversation Thread

Curious to ask, I was looking at the most recent relay, and was curious if anyone has tried a relay where people pass recordings of themselves speaking the language, alongside a grammar; in essence, the torches are audio files, rather than written texts?

These are all excellent! My favorite is probably *təŋgáyskik > köj3 , if I had to pick just one. It's definitely an interesting word, the path is roughly as follows *təŋgáyskik > tʰəŋ'geskɯk > tʰəŋ'ŋɤskɯk > tʰŋɤ˩skɯ > tʰŋɤ˩sk > tʰŋɤɕ˩ > kəɕ˥˩ The really evident part is that losing most unstressed s...

Re: Lexember 2022

So I've been absent for a bit because I've been reworking HTAP to have a bit of 'diachrony' behind it, and now that I'm (sort of) finished with that, I'm gonna post some Lexember words Lexember 20-31 20 köj3 /kəɕ˥˩/ land, ground (as opposed to water, sky, underground) from *təŋgáyskik 21 e̋k2döng3öj...

Re: Word-Final <r> in Portuguese

Popped up Duolingo Portuguese to test, and no, the word final /r/ appears as [x], which is, to my knowledge, fairly standard for Brazilian Portuguese. It might be a little bit more front than the typical uvulo-velar [x̠] I hear most English speakers use for /x/, but it's definitely a velar fricative

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

:eng: handaxe and :deu: Handaxt (a small axe to be held in one hand) If they mean the same thing, what's the misfortune? I'd say in common parlance, a hatchet can be referred to as a handaxe, but the traditional definition of handaxe is the human archeological remains of knapped flint or chert, whi...

Oh huzzah! It's a Christmas miracle! [:D] Wild! It looks like the beehive was conjured out of a Boral expression for "crowd"? Seems so! The Boral aucoum can mean both "beehive" and "swarm, crowd" [xD] When I saw loglorn's translation, my first instinct was that 'beehiv...

ɶʙ ɞʛ: majˈlu ʎʎũ mʕaɟˈɟu < ma:ʎˈɲu Clade is right; think more about the pharyngeal fricative with regards to the reconstruction nɜˈjɔl nɔlˈlon ɲæ˩ɲæʊ˩˥ < nalˈɲɔl Clade is right and you have the right sort of structure down, ie n(Nucleus)(lateral)n(Nucleus)(lateral), but think a bit about [ɲæ˩ɲæʊ˩˥]...
