Re: False cognates
English die , Russian дай ( daj singular imperative form of "give"), and Hebrew די ( daj "enough"). They are all pronounced the same (although the Russian form is pronounced with a dental plosive). How are these false cognates? Although the pronunciations are the same, the meani...

Re: What did you accomplish today?
Yeah, my bad. I keep mixing them up all the time. That's not polysynthetic, that's just plain agglutination.

Re: What did you accomplish today?
I'll probably have some seven or eight cases, but going all fifteen is too much. At a certain point, it seems like like cases and more like postpositions affixed on a stem. ok (: also, do you consider to separate case and number? If by that you mean taking the polysynthetic approach of having a plu...

Re: What did you accomplish today?
Unfortunately, my knowledge of morphosyntactics isn't too good, and while it could be a time to polish it up, I don't really feel that alignment, you know? But no, I have to use cases. I already speak a caseless language, and it feels empty. According to your needs, I think the best way is to "...

Re: What did you accomplish today?
Why not both? Quite a few languages do that, for instance Greenlandic or Choctaw. It would make the language too polysynthetic for my taste. Not that I don't like polysynthesis, it's just not what I want to do with my language. Another WALS map . Ah, so there you have it. I'm just too Eurocentric f...

Re: What did you accomplish today?
you can consider an Ergative-Absolutive case alignment like that of Basque, or have a lot of locative cases like Finnish, or both (: another way: don't do cases, and let the verb agree with both of the subject and the direct object, and use the "pronoun N"(for things like "my/your/ou...

Re: What did you accomplish today?
So, go read up on what languages from outside Europe do: I'd recommend starting with Something like Yimas or Nuu-Chah-Nulth, or looking at WALS . Also, please don't bring the whole logic thing up again. There's very little "logic" involved in language at all: There's always more than one ...

Re: What did you accomplish today?
I started working on a proto-language for a family I wish to create. I'm trying to avoid PIE-ness, but forming creative yet logical verbal and noun paradigms simply stumps me. I just keep seeing that Eurocentrism; take for instance this declension for *ą́ki "snake:" nom.sg. ą́ki acc.sg. ą́...

Re: Varangian
That's a great concept. Really looking forward to seeing some texts. It's also more realistic than mine; I just took Proto-Germanic and applied Polish sound changes onto it, basically stealing from Wenedyk.
