Re: Fredauon Fun Facts

Fredauon Fun Fact #33: All over Fredauon there are mythological tales of feathered flying monsters. One kind of monsters flies through the sky without flapping with its giant wings only to quickly nosedive out of the blue and snatch small children that play outside. Another one is nocturnal with la...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

AFAIK, the FOFC is supposed to be asymetric, so [V-O]-Aux is banned but Aux-[OV] is okay, contrary to what the name suggests. I hasten to add that this in itself does not explain anything and could only be a first step on the way to a potential explanation.

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

[mõ - muaŋ] [wa - mva] [bæ - pa] [mpàà - mmaa] [*mwa] [*mwa] [*ba] [*mbaa] [*mwon - *mwa] [*ba - *mbaa] [*mwã] [*mba] [bwã] I think there is a typo in the second row because you have [*mwa] twice. Incidentally, this is close for both. [*mwã] is also an intermediate form, you just have it at the wro...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

Arayaz Okay, so your groupings are all correct, as are most of your intermediate forms, namely *ba, *mbaa, *mba, *mwa (reasonably close). *moŋ is wrong though and I guess this is one of the reasons why your overall reconstruction is still only 50% correct. Going back to an earlier cue, you could thi...

Re: Fredauon Fun Facts

That's probably still an advantage of spoken language on Fredauon. As I explained elsewhere, the idea is that The Other Continent is pretty noisy. It's probably also relatively flat, except for the volcanos.

Re: Fredauon Fun Facts

Fredauon Fun Fact #32: Since both sign languages and spoken languages developed diachronically since prehistoric times, a proto-language of all languages of Fredauon would have included spoken words as well as signed gestures. This is similar to the languages spoken on The Islands In Between, even ...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

visions Wait, I think you changed your guess at some point. Your overall guess *mban, IIRC, is still only 50% right. Your grouping is spot on, though. Your intermediate reconstructions *mba (IIRC,you edited it out) is correct. *mwa and *mbaa, and *ba are also reasonaly correct. *mwon is wrong and mi...

Re: AMA on Indonesian

Just wanted to mention that I am still working on the next post. Turns out, the syntactic properties of Indonesian TAM markers are pretty complex and still the subject of ongoing research. I am thinking about how to simplify it and what to exclude right now but I might actually have time to do this ...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

visions Your protoword has half of its segments correct. All your low-level groupings (bæ - pa; mõ - muaŋ; wa mva; mpàà - mmaa) are correct. *mwa is the correct protoform for the low-level grouping [wa mva]. *mbaa is the correct protoform for the low-level grouping [mpàà - mmaa]. *ba is the correct ...

Fredauon Fun Fact #31: In the civil servant boarding schools of the Wizard Republic, students usually have a small room on their own. The room has a chest for storing clothing and writing utensils. There is also a small table for studying and a couch-like piece of furniture that is used for sleepin...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

Okay, here are my responses: Just a sketch: 2+3 is a valid group, but you only reconstructed part of the protoform correctly 4+5(+1) is not a valid group, you need to kick out one. This might also help with the protoform. 6+7+8 is not a valid group, you need to kick out one. This might also help wit...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

Both guesses for the proto-form are way off (like between 0% and 40% of the segments are correct) in the same way. There is no sneaky continuum business but I guess you could say there is some funny business going on. More detailed response to Visions guess: Your low-level groupings are correct (/PA...

Fredauon Fun Fact #30: The standard formal way of dressing for a modern wizard consists of trousers and two jackets. A thin tight white jacket is worn beneath a thicker wider black jacket. Both jackets have a zigzag cut pattern in the front and can be buttoned by toggles. A rope is worn around the ...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

Congratulations on your job [:)]
Here is the next challenge:

1. bæ
2. mõ
3. muaŋ
4. pa
5. wa
6. mva
7. mpà:
8. m: a:

This is just a list of cognates in no particular order. The last one has a white space in there because it otherwise produces a strange letter A icon.
