Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge
visions Your protoword has half of its segments correct. All your low-level groupings (bæ - pa; mõ - muaŋ; wa mva; mpàà - mmaa) are correct. *mwa is the correct protoform for the low-level grouping [wa mva]. *mbaa is the correct protoform for the low-level grouping [mpàà - mmaa]. *ba is the correct ...

Fredauon Fun Fact #31: In the civil servant boarding schools of the Wizard Republic, students usually have a small room on their own. The room has a chest for storing clothing and writing utensils. There is also a small table for studying and a couch-like piece of furniture that is used for sleepin...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge
Okay, here are my responses: Just a sketch: 2+3 is a valid group, but you only reconstructed part of the protoform correctly 4+5(+1) is not a valid group, you need to kick out one. This might also help with the protoform. 6+7+8 is not a valid group, you need to kick out one. This might also help wit...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge
Both guesses for the proto-form are way off (like between 0% and 40% of the segments are correct) in the same way. There is no sneaky continuum business but I guess you could say there is some funny business going on. More detailed response to Visions guess: Your low-level groupings are correct (/PA...

Fredauon Fun Fact #30: The standard formal way of dressing for a modern wizard consists of trousers and two jackets. A thin tight white jacket is worn beneath a thicker wider black jacket. Both jackets have a zigzag cut pattern in the front and can be buttoned by toggles. A rope is worn around the ...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge
Congratulations on your job
Here is the next challenge:
1. bæ
2. mõ
3. muaŋ
4. pa
5. wa
6. mva
7. mpà:
8. m: a:
This is just a list of cognates in no particular order. The last one has a white space in there because it otherwise produces a strange letter A icon.

Fredauon Fun Fact #29 : During the Era of Isolation, rogue Wizards based in tunnels below the Great Mountains sold so-called Demons to the people south of the Great Mountains. Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
This sounds unusual but not impossible. One way to think of it would be that voicing is contrastive and breathy voice is just an allophonic process that applies to voiced stops before vowels, which is still unusual but maybe not as unusual. IMHO, it would be easier to say that vowels are contrastive...

Fredauon Fun Fact #27: Writing evolved several times independently on Fredauon. One family includes the Ancient cuneiform scripts and the Abjad/Abigudas used around the Great Mountains, e.g. by the Wizards. Independent families includes the logographic/syllabic blackletter runes around Bólks, the c...

Re: Fredauon Fun Facts
True, these dwarves are not bearded, just short. But malnoutrition and lack of sunlight will make them look different from regular people. Maybe dirt from underground labour will also make them look older.

Re: Fredauon Fun Facts
So you were thinking of dragon flellyfishes? Great idea but I think there won't be any fire-breathing creatures on Fredauon. There will be Flying Dragons though: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draco_%28lizard%29?wprov=sfla1 Oh, and water dragons: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_water_dragon?wpr...
