Re: Diachronic Conlanging open world
I'm more concerned about the fact that one group will probably extirpate the other eventually. Unless they have a "shelter" island, a group will likely be extirpated. Why on earth would that happen? For example, South Andaman Island (a bit over 1,000 sq km) was traditionally inhabited by ...

Re: Rawàng Ata Nouns and Noun Phrases (rough draft)
I'll skip reduplication since I posted an earlier draft not long ago. -------------- Noun Phrases The noun phrase, in addition to the noun itself, may comprise particles, adjectives, quantifiers, counters, numerals, ostensives, attributes, motifs, possessive structures, and appositives. In addition,...

Re: Rawàng Ata Nouns and Noun Phrases (rough draft)
Nominal Affixation Common (and proper) nouns in Rawàng Ata may take any of eight case suffixes, and one number suffix, as well as two non-possessive prefixes. Bound nouns further take one of a number of possessive prefixes, which will be covered in the chapter on possession. Case Suffixes Rawàng Ata...

Re: Rawàng Ata Nouns and Noun Phrases (rough draft)
Navigational and Non-Navigational Nouns Navigational and non-navigational nouns are not distinguished in basic syntax, nor overtly in any way. However, the distinction is significant in determining the syntax of semantic expressions. Broadly, navigational nouns are a small number of nouns, typically...

Rawàng Ata Nouns and Noun Phrases (rough draft)
Thought I'd share some of what I've been working on. The pdf idea didn't seem to go down very well, so instead I've just copy-pasted (and manually added some more linebreaks). The result is very ugly, but I'd rather spend time continuing with the language than spend too much time manually formatting...

Re: Tarquesta Quenya case system is possible!
Closer to home, I know it's not a huge number of cases, but the general phenomenon can be seen in Gaelic, which has a nominative/accusative, a genitive, a dative, and a vocative. It doesn't seem much of a stretch to me to stick some prepositions onto, say, the dative, and end up with something like ...
Re: ADANEWs
Post your best ADANEWs here. My most recent ADANEW is probably not that impressive. I just noticed once that in English and especially in German people will sometimes end their questions with "or", sometimes without changing the syntax or anything, like "You are going to the store, o...

Re: New Tool for Dictionary/Lexicon-Building
What would be useful in a dictionary entry would be a field for etymology (ideally, linked to entries in the dictionary of the proto-lang). And a field for miscellaneous notes.
Although really, what would be useful would be user-defined fields.

No, "will" is a verb as well as a noun. Likewise, "want" is a noun as well as a verb. This is basic English comprehension.

Re: Con-Script Development Centre
That is a valid question, but: - can you point me to any scripts that completely lack curves due to being primarily written in stone? Ogham for sure, and Banpo is close. Paleohispanic seems to have numerous curves even if it has a tendency toward straight lines, just like Brahmi and Latin. So that'...

I drew something that would be considered Proto-Vrkhazhian on stone: http://s16.postimg.org/eteenid05/IMG_20151102_00220.jpg Separate from this, I'm still deciding on punctuation mark designs. Unless the difference between P-Vrkhaz and Vrkhaz is 5 years, the designs seem way too similar (also, is t...

Headless relative clauses are not relative pronouns and are not gaps. WALS doesn't talk much about headless relative clauses at all. Gap: The man I saw yesterday was at the store. Relative pronoun: The man, who I saw yesterday , was at the store. Headless: Whoever I saw yesterday was at the store. ...

Well, not today, per se, but recently wrote a chapter on nouns and noun phrases, and now am struggling through pronouns. What this means is that native Sumerian speakers could work out what affixes ought to be there, so they didn't bother to write most of them. However, only after Sumerian was being used only as a second language by speakers of Akkadian, who understandably had less proficiency with the language than ...

Also also, could a single dynasty possibly last 500-600 years? Yes. See: China, Ancient Egypt, Britain(?), Depends on how you define a dynasty. OK, how do you guys decide what kind of technology and magic you want to exist in your conworlds, and how to make it make sense? I have this problem where I just like making cultures, but I can't decide on what the actual world they live in is like, other than that it's fantasy because I like thing...
