* Georgian კაკაბი [kʼakʼabi] "patridge" * Maori kākāpō [kaːkaːpɔː] "kakapo" both words are used to indicate types of birds, though different types As far as I can tell, these are derived from the birdcalls via onomatopoeia, so it may not be too surprising. Yes, kākā in Māori is ...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I don't think there is an easy asnwer but here are some functions that I know of. 1) The difference between the two arguments of transitive verbs. Happens in English (and probably many other languages). 2) Information structure, so things like topic and focus. Happens in many languages including En...

I was wondering what a vocables language would look like. Nice.
I'd like to see an Amerind one (maybe that's too vast?)

Oh hey, I'm Greek now.

Re: Web 1.0 nostalgia

I love Tchaikovsky. I used to listen to Souvenir de Florence, just close my eyes and imagine a story for it. Ah, and what I'd give to see a real birzhe (boursa). I've actually tried doing one of those - it's very beneficial, if both people have the same goal and ability. To truly confide in a friend...

Is it weird to feel nostalgia for a time before one's birth? This probably not related to the topic at hand, but sometimes I feel that when hanging around older people or things. Or when I think about things that used to be normal in the olden days, but are relatively absent today. Show me old thin...

Inuit uses base 20, but has a separate word for 1000. Still, you could just macguyver it anyways and borrow a word for, say, 8000.
