Re: Chwakesha
Nice phonology. I especially like the tone system, it's simple but interesting. Most pre-nasalised consonants cannot occur initially, excepting /ᵐb/ which occurs not infrequently (but often unnasalised) Was there a natlang inspiration for this specific feature? Not that I don't think it's realistic,...

There's also the Vulgarlang conlang generator which is alright although a bit Standard Fantasy Language-ey. I don't think it is very good at naturalism. And way too European. (Of course, its creator is on this forum and I've already insulted them enough in the thread they made for feedback, so I'll...

Fredauon Fun Fact #13: Evolution on Fredauon is Lamarckian in the following restricted sense: characteristics gradually acquired by use or disuse of certain body parts are inheritable. This is because cells inside organs that are used more frequently or less frequently change their internal buildin...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
Some Lakes Plain languages have pretty cool clusters like [nɾ] or [hn] or [mn]. Here's my submission for "minimalist inventory + clusters" /t t͡ɕ k/ /b d d͡ʑ ɡ/ /s x/ /i̝ ɪ ɛ ɐ/ + some tones monosyllabic +/– pre-initial (x t k)(ɛ ɐ) x < *p Syllable structure is CCVVC; the only coda is /x/ ...

That suggests that you have marked H and L tones, and then a separate unmarked tone. Which is perfectly naturalistic.LinguoFranco wrote: ↑08 Feb 2024 19:27 [ka˥.na˥]

Those are the underlying tone melodies for each of them. The third one, however, can be rising, falling or low depending on the adjacent morphemes.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Well, in the case of my conlang, toneless words are realized as low toned in isolation, but only words with a low tone melody, toneless words have different realizations depending on the adjacent tones of other words. In this case, would the low tone still be considered unmarked? I have been ponder...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
So, if a language has a simple tone system (let's say just high and low), would there be a difference between a low tone melody and a toneless melody? Well, it depends on the language. Usually speaking, if a language has a fairly uncomplicated binary low/high tone distinction, low tone is unmarked....

Re: Ai 12.0 (still a Lakes Plain language)
I will also point out that all of the attested Lakes Plain microinventories still hold to the typological generalization whereby pairs of consonants of the same PoA are distinguished by MoA, something that seems to be an organizing principle for even the smallest inventories - e.g. Rokotas with the...

Re: Ai 12.0 (still a Lakes Plain language)
The only further I can see /b t d ɸ s/ going would be the loss of /t/, merging with /s/. At what point would people just be talking static? If there is to be a phonemic bounce-back to a larger inventory, I imagine there could be potentially strange phonemes to derive until a most balanced state, li...

Who wants to completely restart this family from scratch? I do! Also since I find it amusing I will be making proto-Click2 peoples unreasonably advanced, with unanalysable words for things like "earplug" and "download speed" and "ballpoint pen". Presumably modern Click2...
