Maps: how my countries and cities look like

Post by Yagia1 »

I've been drawing maps of imaginary countries since - I guess - my childhood. Mapmaking came before conlanging. Gradually, some 'grand design' emerged. Nowadays, they interact neatly. My conlang Vayardyio is spoken right here. I will add some more maps shortly. One preview already: city plan of the capital Galirno on the river Canari, watch here. More to come!

I draw maps by hand, with Rotring ink pens and colour pencils. I use different scales. For the last couple of years I try hard to improve the technical 'looks', varying from large overviews to topographical maps. These I find the most beautiful to create. I like to use maps as a decor to stories I write. here is a detailed map of the region called the 'Great Confluence', the heartland of Vayardyio where three major rivers meet. This is a 1/10.000 topographical map of Cape Calapri and a stretch of beaches on the wild Great Ocean coast.

Like it? There is more!

Say, that's really good! Not much else to contribute, but I like these maps.
I did it. I made the world's worst book blog.

[+1] Those are some lovely maps, especially for something hand drawn!

Great maps!
However your second link (city plan of the capital Galirno on the river Canari) does not work for me, Dropbox says that this folder does not exist.

I'll throw another [+1] to the pile! To draw maps like that, in that amount of detail, by hand, is really impressive, and once you zoom in you can really see the effort that went into it (like, every circle and square and line is unique, you can see slight differences in the letters from place to place, but it all comes together to form something consistent and detailed). And it even looks technically well thought out. Like, the elevation and how that affects the flow of rivers, and how the geography affects borders, and also the placement of settlements of varying sizes. I'm sure someone could find some detail to give some constructive feedback on, but right now I can't find anything to say other that "wow" [:D]
You can tell the same lie a thousand times,
But it never gets any more true,
So close your eyes once more and once more believe
That they all still believe in you.
Just one time.

Another [+1] from me, these maps are gorgeous! I used to dabble in hand-drawn mapmaking but could never get this kind of detail and realism. Awesome work.
Edit: Substituted a string instrument for a French interjection.

Hello conworlders, thank you so much for your compliments [:D] [:D] [:D]
@ Titus Flavius:
your second link (city plan of the capital Galirno on the river Canari) does not work for me
you're absolutely right. Wrong link. Again:
see here
In this drawing, I couldn't manage to insert street names and such because the scale of the drawing is too small.
I invite you to use your imagination [xD]

Thank you Sangi39 for your nice comments too! It really encourages me to continue. I need flows of creativity to set out new drawings - though the source is endless ...
