Gulahalan (Translation/Adaption) [North Sami]

Post by Ceresz »

INTRODUCTION
Hello, Sámi learners. I thought it would be helpful to provide a translation of Gulahalan for those of you who don't know Swedish.

Let's start by looking at the orthography (taken from Wikipedia):
Vowels: /ɑ a e i o u/ <a á e i o u>
Consonants /m n ŋ p b t d k g ts dz tʃ dʒ f v θ ð s ʃ h j l r/ <m n ŋ p b t d k g c z č ž f v ŧ đ s š h j l r>

For more information, here's a PDF on Northern Sámi phonology. These two will become useful in the future: Sámi case tutorial (doesn't include the essive) & Full list of consonant gradation.

Gulahalan is divided into two parts with ten chapters each. Let's start, shall we?

Thank you so much for this! Just to make sure I'm not learning it wrong, would the first dialogue be pronounced like this? (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/39376541/Untitled%20%283%29.wma).

Edit: I've removed the audio file, on account of it being completely wrong.

No problem. I'll translate the second chapter tomorrow, as I'm quite busy at the moment. I'm afraid I can't listen to audio files right now, but you can just go to the Gulahalan page and click the little speaker button [;)].

I can't wait. Also, if anyone who already knows Sami could translate the lyrics for "Vádjolus" that would be greatly appreciated.

I've tried translating Vádjolus before but all I've come up with is a bunch of bollocks. Something about walking, miracles, and stuff like that. I have got Stirdon and Gávpot translated reasonably well, though, if you want 'em. (Vádjolus is still the best song out of the four Valkeapää songs on YouTube, shame I can't grasp the meaning.)

Thank you, Ceresz, for translating! I stopped trying to follow Gulahalan when I felt like I was learning more Swedish than Sámi. [:S] Also, thanks for the two resources. We should compile a North Sámi resource list.

Ok, fml. I was posting the translation to Gávpot (basically redoing it because the original translation sucked) and my login timed out. I'll do it tomorrow [¬.¬]

Notes
On the Swedish side of Sápmi you simply answer a greeting with, for example: Buorre beaivi fal or Buorre beaivi!. On the Norwegian and Finnish sides of Sápmi it's normal to answer Ipmel atti! when someone greets you.

Bures! is a simple greeting that usually should be answered with a handshake. If you haven't met each other for a while you always shake hands and say Bures!. This also goes for when you introduce someone.

I'm reviving this thread for 2 reasons:
1: Using Gulahalan through google translate is tedious, and
2: YOU STILL OWE ME MY TRANSLATION OF GAVPOT, DAMMIT! [:P]

Hey, I was struggling to find the written lyrics to the much discussed song Stirdon in Sami. I found this page, and with the help of it and other translations I have put together this lyrics video displaying both the lyrics in Sami and English in parallel texts format. You can find the video by googling on YouTube "Niko Valkeapää - Stirdon with lyrics in English and Finnish" or pasting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rViPvnJ_GQA

Sorry I cannot add the translation here, I used a line by line translation and I don't have the patience to copy-paste separately all the lines.
