What are people's favorite Natlang linguistic grammars?

Post by Solarius »

I've got a gift card for Christmas, which is burning in my pocket, and I want to get some book grammars. Any recommendations?

That depends: What types of languages are you interested in? Otherwise, this just turns into "Micamo's list of favorite natlangs that she knows have grammars available."

Arabic has the most interesting grammar in my opinion.
Or Nahuatl.

I prefer languages like Chinese (I use this term broadly), and for Christmas received a grammar on Cantonese and a grammar on Classical (post-Han dynasty) Chinese. If isolating is something you like, the Routlege Comprehensive grammar of Cantonese is pretty good, the modern edition has characters and is pretty modern in usage as well. (Also, it is fun to compare it to Mandarin, which I have studied. Granted that is a useless feature if you haven't studied Mandarin, but it is fun for me.)

I really love Japanese grammar, especially Classical (Early Middle) Japanese grammar. All the structure and regularity is so elegant and beautiful; Classical Japanese a bit too much so, almost smells like a conlang.

Fuck it, I'm just gonna make "Micamo's big honkin list of languages she happens to like that she knows are relatively well-documented." Grouped by linguistic macro-area (given in no particular order) and then sorted alphabetically:

Arapaho
Choctaw
Chumash
Coast Tsimshian
Dakelh
Haida
Kashaya
Klamath
Koasati
Koyukon
Kwak'wala
Lushootseed
Mohawk
Musqueam
Navajo
Nuxalk
Pawnee
Tlingit
Upper Necaxa Totonac

Burushaski

Boumaa Fijian
South Efate
Tuvaluan

Sandawe

Tariana
Tiriyo
Wanano
Warao
Wari'

Nivkh
Ket
Chukchi
Evenki
Ainu
Irabu
Ogami

Fore
Manambu
Rotokas
Yimas

Northern Saami
Tundra Yukaghir

Arrernte
Gooniyandi
Jingulu
Kayardild
Kuuk Thaayorre
Lardil
Mangarayi
Warrango
Yankunytjatjara

I'll probably keep editing this to add more langs that I forgot.

Yidiny (seen at least 3 ways to write that).
Dixon has an interesting grammar of that, from which I have learned much.

I expected you to say that.

Actually, a list of someone's favorite natlangs with grammars available was what I was looking for.

Thanks guys. [:D]
