What about <au> [aʊ̯]? I also thought <s> was /ʃ/ before some consonants.

Also, how do I know when <r> should be pronounced as /r, ʀ/ or /ɐ/?

For example, is besser: [ˈbɛsɐ] or [ˈbɛsəʀ]?

And what about determining syllable stress? This is very important for pronouncing words correctly.

[r] or [ʁ] (rarely [ʀ]) is a question of region. [ʁ] is most common throughout Germany.

/ʁ/ is pronounced as [ʁ] in the onset of a syllable, [χ] when following a voiceless plosive in the onset of a syllable and [ɐ] when following a vowel in the same syllable:

round: <rund> = ['ʁʊnt]
noise: <der Krach> = [de͜ɐ 'kχaχ]
clock: <die Uhr> = [di: 'u:͜ɐ]
horse: <das Pferd> = [das 'p͜fɛ͜ɐt]

Syllable stress is usually on the first syllable of the wordstem. Some prefixes take the stress, especially those, which are separable. Sometimes this leads to minimal pairs:

to drive: <fahren> = ['fa:ʁn]
to bypass, to drive around: <umfahren> = [ʊm'fa:ʁn]
to knock over, to drive over: <umfahren> = ['ʊmfa:ʁn]

Yay, antonyms distinguish by syllable stress :D

Testy, you should try explaining things when teaching instead of just posting a list and telling someone to solve it on their own.

One question to all user: Would you like to have more German lessons? I was thinking about whether I should create a new thread or just post further lessons here, but first of all I would just like to know if more lessons are needed, because if no I would just waste a lot of time :)
