I am back from the hospitals after three issues.

What can I say? It doesn't fit above, put it here. Also the location of board rules/info.

I am back from the hospitals after three issues.

Post by eldin raigmore »

I am back from the hospitals after three issues.

On Saturday the 3rd of September — my fifth day totally free of COVID symptoms — I started feeling pains like (but not exactly like) those I had for my two previous kidney stones.
All the Urgent Care Clinics were either closed or booked solid, so I went to the nearest emergency room.
They found I did indeed have a kidney stone (issue #1). I passed it. But in the course of generally looking after my health they found I had DKA (Diabetic Keto-Acidosis (issue #2)) so they couldn’t let me go home — or drive.
They had an ambulance take me to a bigger hospital in their chain that was in a different town and had the specialists and equipment to treat the DKA.
So they got me over the DKA. In the process they tested blood pretty often and found troponin. Troponin is supposed to stay in your heart, not get in your blood. But when your heart is stressed, for instance because of high demand (e.g. COVID+kidney stone+DKA), it might release troponin into your blood. This may indicate an ischemia or infarction, or maybe not.
So they did an ultrasound echocardiogram of my heart to see.
And they found I have an LVEF (Left Ventricle Ejection Fraction) of only 25% (issue #3).
Normal is 50%-75%. Borderline is 40%-50%. Anything under 30% is BAD.
Last time my regular cardiologist checked my EF it was 55%, so this was a new problem.
They said I should have a cardiac catheterization. The total probability of ALL problems with a cath are about 1%; 99% of the time absolutely NOTHING goes wrong.
But the odds that a person with a 25% EF will survive an entire year are about 50%.
So I had the cath.

First they found out from my regular cardiologist (an Arab doc named Wes, like my Sufi nephew) where in my heart were the four places he had done non-invasive procedures to my heart before.
They were three stents and one balloon angioplasty.
This cath found three blockages.
Two of my stents are still fine.
One of my stents “has gone bad” — gotten dirty or something; anyway, blocked to a significant degree.
My angioplasty site is also re-blocked.
Plus I have one brand-new blockage where there’s never been a problem before.

Three blockages is too many to fix through catheterization. So I’m going to have to have bypass surgery.
They don’t want to do it less than 30 days after I first tested positive for COVID, so they sent me home until 9/24.

Friday the 9th of September, about 11:00 PM, I got home.
I’m wearing a “Life Vest”-style wearable defibrillator. I have to wear it except when bathing, for possibly up to three months; there’s a chance that after the surgery, before it heals and my heart gets stronger, I’ll still need the “Life Vest” for a while.

Pains in the ass from all this:
It’s hard to sit on the toilet or lie down and sleep with this life vest on.
They changed my medicines regimen up and I haven’t gotten it down yet.
I can’t drive.
Last time I went grocery shopping I wasn’t preparing for this, so I might not have enough of the foods I’m now supposed to eat.

A PITA not from this, but it’s more irritating now;
My insurance-company-owned pharmacy has an incompetently programmed robot menu-thingy, and there’s no way to contact a human, and it takes as good as forever to even talk to the faulty robot.

….. ….. ….. ….. …..

But other than that, I’m doing pretty well!

How is everyone else?

That's a lot, but glad you're doing as well as you can in the circumstances. I hope things continue going well for you in all of this, and a swift recovery.

Sounds like what logicians call "overwhelming exception".

I was really frightened when I read this post. I really hope I don't have to go through all this when I'm in my sixties. Of course, I've been underweight for most of my life.

Glad to hear you're feeling better!
How is everyone else?
I had some bad days the past week, but right now I am doing well with a recent birthday and a trip to buy many Frappuccinos. I will put a new YouTube video up later today.

Ye stars, that's quite the marathon of medical mishaps. You have all my best wishes that the upcoming procedures and surrounding circumstances pass by without additional discomforts beyond those already expected.

Nothing much to report here - recovering from a cold, went for a blood test this morning mostly because my GP said I should do one next time I felt poorly, and my mom was going for one herself anyway. T'was a twofer, so to say.

PS: I spent a minute putting "….." through a translator thinking it might be Morse or something alike. If it is, I failed; if it isn't, I'm fooled.

Each group of five periods is meant to be separated from the next by a group of five spaces.
But the software pares the five spaces down to two (or one?)
If it were Morse it would be five repetitions of the same digit; 5.
If you had persisted I think you’d have thought of 55555.
But maybe not! I don’t really know how to guess what would have happened in such an alternative universe!
Or maybe you’d have gotten HE HE HE HE HE and wondered what I was giggling at.

….

How’d your blood test turn out?
Might you have done better had you studied harder?
;-)

Unless I'm misunderstanding something, it seems there's a difference in how our devices display a sequence of five periods! I didn't even realize that this is what they were - then again, I was also tired.
On my screen, the last two look slightly bigger, rendering them similarly to ---// if you put it on a small font size (e.g. ---//). My knee-jerk assumption was that it could be "dot-dot-dot-dash-dash", but I also don't know anything about Morse, so it took the translator to tell me that would mean either "3" or "SM" if there was a space after the third. Anyway - silly thought, silly outcome.

As for the blood test: the results aren't back yet, but I've never gotten below an A or a B, so I'm not worried.

EDIT: A quick copy-pasting test show that the first three periods in your posts turn into a separate, single-character ellipsis; which explains why they render differently. Might be a CBB feature. Let's see ... .....
EDIT 2: No, not working for me.

So, did anyone try to take pictures of you wearing the "life vest"? ;) 📷

No, no-one has.
I could take a selfie, I suppose, without too much indecency from most people’s ideas of modesty.
But then I would have to figure out how to make it available to the bboard!
I’m pretty sure I once knew how, or knew someone who’d do it for me.
But I can’t remember now!

….

Incidentally, the cloth part of this “life vest” is a lot skimpier than a bikini-top worn by a woman who wants to start an argument as to whether or not she’s actually wearing a bikini-top.

….

Why does bikini rhyme with apple-tini? Or does it?
