Does it refer to something lard related?shimobaatar wrote: ↑06 Dec 2021 00:52It is not.
The way you've worded this actually makes it a bit tricky to answer without potentially giving too much away, but yes, the word would/could have already been in use before the 20th century.
The word does not refer to a modern invention.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs 2
This is another one that I'm finding a bit tricky to answer, but I'm going to say that no, it probably won't be helpful to think of it as something related to lard. The connection between what cuayexoñas refers to and what xoña(s) typically means by itself is likely not going to be obvious.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs 2
Is it a derogatory term for some sort of disliked group. Perhaps an overweight person, or a tax collector? (I'm not sure why that last one popped into my head, but I can't shake it.)

Good guesses, but I'm afraid not.
However, I'd say that you're closer to being on the right track than anyone else so far.

Could it be understood in the semantic space of government or society? If so, does it refer to "pork barrel"?

Very creative thinking, but the answer to both questions is "no", I'm afraid.qwed117 wrote: ↑15 Dec 2021 22:33 Could it be understood in the semantic space of government or society? If so, does it refer to "pork barrel"?

Does it refer to something concrete or abstract?

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs 2
Hmm… Simply saying that it's either concrete or abstract and just leaving it at that would feel misleading to me, I'm afraid. I'd say that it's less concrete than a "table" or "chair", but not as abstract as something like "awareness" or "disadvantage".
This is another question that I'm not quite sure how to answer without feeling like I'm giving too much away. I apologize, since I know this isn't very helpful. Hopefully, though, the reasons for my hesitance will become clear once the meaning of the word is discovered.
Hopefully this brief summary will be more helpful:
shimobaatar wrote: ↑27 Oct 2021 14:33 Language: Something Iberian
Word: cuayexoñas
IPA: [kwaʑeˈʃoɲas]
- It's a noun. The form cuayexoñas can be either singular or plural.
- cuaye- and -xoñas are from (inflected forms of) Classical Latin colligō and axungia, respectively.
- On its own, cuaye is the third-person singular present indicative form of the verb coyer "to harvest, to reap, to pick (fruit), to grab, to seize, to take, to collect, to remove, to extract, to pull out".
- On its own, xoñas is the plural form of the noun xoña "grease, fat, lard, suet, butter, bacon".
- The word would/could have already been in use before the 20th century.
- It does not refer to a type of car, anything with a particularly obvious connection to lard, any kind of cooking equipment, soap, or anything related to the government or politics.
- It does not exactly refer to a person or animal, although this is the closest that anyone has come to being on the right track.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs 2
I do not know if this has already been asked but does xoña carry the metaphorical meaning of "well being" that its cognates have in the Eastern Romance branch?
