Vazâkatâvtiî - Wally Toxic

Post by Xing »

Wally Toxic needs a language!

I need your help in creating it.

Therefore, I'm going to try a new (?) concept - that I call "dictatorial collab-langing". Basically, I decide, and you do the job for me

It's not as scary as it might seem though. Probably, I'll end up doing most of the job myself. But I will frequently throw out questions ("shall the language be X, or Y")? Probably, I'll opt for the first response I receive, if I don't find that one too weird. (And maybe, if the same person already has responded to several question, I might choose the response from someone else, to get some variation.)

Let's start with the phonology.

Question #1:

What vowel system should I/we start with?
a) A three-vowel system: /i a u/
b) A four vowel system: /i e a o/, /i e a u/, /i ə a u/ (the exact phonetic realisation might be decided upon later)
c) A five-vowel system: /i e a o u/
d) A six-vowel system: /i e a ɑ o u/
e) A seven-vowel system: /i e ɛ a ɔ o u/

Remember that these are only what we shall start with! I/we might add various complications (allophones, neutralisations, tones, lengths, nasalisation, etc.) later.

Question #2:

And for the plosives. How many contrasting series should there be?
a) One: /p t k/
b) Two: /p t k b d g/
c) Three: /pʰ tʰ kʰ p t k b d g p/
d) Four (or perhaps even more): /pʼ tʼ kʼ pʰ tʰ kʰ p t k b d g/

We are only concerned about the number of contrasting series - how the distinctions will be realised phonetically will be decided upon later. Gemination, POA's and secondary articulations will also be dealt with separately later.

Wally Toxic will be very happy if you can help me make a lang for him!

Q#1: b)/i ə a u/
Q#2: a)
Edit: very interesting concept, although I feel like you do the work and we decide, but we'll see [;)]

Then there will be four vowels, and a single series of plosives. Decided.

Yeah, I thought there might be good if some person were so to speak "in charge" of it, so it doesn't run kitchen-sinky.

Question #3

Should there be any kind of tonal system or pitch accent?
a) Yes (some form; exactly what it would look like and how complex will be decided later)
b) No

Then there will be some kind of tonal system or pitch accent.
Edit: Since a couple of people have objected, this might be re-considered at a later stage. But from now on, let's say that there will be some kind of tone/pitch system.
Question #4:

Should either nasals or fricatives be absent from the language?
a) yes, there should be no (phonemic) nasals.
b) yes, there should be no (phonemic) fricatives.
c) no, the language should have both fricatives and nasals.

Nej. Keep it consistent with the plosives.

Ok. There will be a distinction between voiced and voiceless fricatives.

Question #6

Should there be a phonemic palatal, alveolo-palatal or paleto-alveolar stop or affricate - /c/, /c͡ç/, /t͡ɕ/, /t͡ʃ/ etc?

b) No

Yes, but always following vowels, never following constanants.

cool thread idea.

Then there will be some palatal(ised) plosive/affricate - let's say /t͡ɕ/ for the moment.

Question #7

What about liquids?
a) There should both a lateral /l/ and rhotic /r/ (the latter may represent some kind of rhotic, trill, flap, etc.)
b) There should be a single liquid - no distinction between /l/ and /r/. (Like a lateral flap, or some phoneme that is underspecified when it comes to the central-lateral distinction)
c) There should be a phoneme that is clearly lateral - a traditional /l/.
d) There should be a phoneme that is clearly rhotic - /r/, /ɾ/ or /ɹ/.

His name is Wally after all, so I'm gonna go ahead and say c) or maybe b) if you want to have more fun.
