Re: Conlang word easter eggs?
There are some good examples in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7164
I couldn't think of what to call this phenomenon when I posted that thread, but "Easter eggs" is a good term.

It's funny because I was just about to merge these two old threads when one of them was suddenly revived..!KaiTheHomoSapien wrote: ↑06 May 2020 06:53 There are some good examples in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7164

Re: Conlang word easter eggs?
I was about to suggest also merging the newest word thread, since the Easter egg back story was what I was aiming for. I didn't know either that this phenomenon was called an Easter egg.
A couple of Easter eggs in Ivook are:
- BBN babin 'soft, cuddly', from one of my cat's many silly pet names.
- QCD atsid 'grandmother', from the name of my grandmother.
And a bit more random:
- UM um 'cloud' - IIRC from the name of actress Uma Thurman, she plays a superhero in some movie, I think, thus sky and clouds, probably.
Re: Conlang word easter eggs?
I think the two threads are fine as they are, since they (perhaps despite your original intention!) are quite different in their focus.Allekanger wrote: ↑06 May 2020 14:59I was about to suggest also merging the newest word thread, since the Easter egg back story was what I was aiming for. Re: Conlang word easter eggs?
I don't have a lot of Easter eggs in my main project due to phonological constraints, but I fit them in there where I can.
The verb for "travel" is "kino," which is the name of the protagonist of an anime I like, and it's about a person who travels between various countries.

Re: Conlang word easter eggs?
The Ábḫanni word for 'cat', habái [ɦɐˈβáɪ̯], I got from putting my cat's name (as close as the phonology could allow) into my protolanguage and evolving it. I doubt anyone could guess what his name is lol. (And it's further complicated by the fact that the Ábḫanni word isn't a direct phonological descendent of the proto-word: the direct descendent is habáiyi, which was at some point reanalyzed to be the plural of habái).

Not a word Easter egg, but a number Easter egg.
In my spreadsheet file for Achel, I keep track of the first word, second third, third word . . . tenth word, etc. to be added to the lexicon.
I just reached word #2,525, so I decided to make it rag, meaning "to survive".

In Yélian, I did the same with all the pets I had as a kid, but mostly adjectives I attributed to them.vo1dwalk3r wrote: ↑17 May 2020 19:28 The Ábḫanni word for 'cat', habái [ɦɐˈβáɪ̯], I got from putting my cat's name (as close as the phonology could allow) into my protolanguage and evolving it. After my first dog, yiva "great, fantastic"
After my second dog, tyesa "to chill"
After my third dog, alegra "to hunt" and legre "cunning"; it was a terrier, which gave birth to the generic word of dog, teriys
After my first cat, niytyel "power" and naityel "trousers"
After my second cat, moli "elegant"
And after my third cat, masi "cute"
Wipe the glass. This is the usual way to start, even in the days, day and night, only a happy one.

Tronun - Idiot. Based off trump. Additionally in that map are tronen, to talk unintelligently, and tren, to be incorrect.
Also in that map is strat, an stupid or rude person, which is related to both Trump (more distantly) and "straight." If you're about to be offended over that, don't. It's a joke.
