What I have been working on
Re: What I have been working on
I am currently working on my language called Pailak pronounced like the word pie with lak on the end.
It is going slow, but it is going great. I decided to put English words with the same meanings together such as choose elect and select that way I only show the Pailak word for them one time and my highlighting rules for Excel does not show it as a duplicate cell.

Re: What I have been working on
I am currently working on my new language Shu. I finally got one that seems to work ok. I have about 600 words so far. My biggest problem is in excel, whether to put just the present tense English verb, then beside it put the past present and future Shu words for it, or whether to go ahead as I am now, and write all tenses in English as well.
Changing it would save a lot of space n the spreadsheet vertically, but I would have 6 columns. One for the English word 3 for the three verb tenses in Shu, one for the noun form of the verb,, and one for the rest of the parts of speech. I would then be assuming that the learner would know that when they see walk, it also means walks, walking, walked, and will walk. However, you know what they say about assuming. Anyway, I'd love to get some feedback as to which method is better, and if anyone has a suggestion as to another method that might work also, I'd be happy to have it.

Question: Or all or most of your verbs regular, or do you have about as many irregular verbs as English or German?Larryrl wrote: ↑28 Jul 2021 16:33 I am currently working on my new language Shu. Re: What I have been working on
The truth is, I do not really know. All verbs present tense start with a B or a D. All past tense verbs start with a K or an L, and all future tense verbs start with either an H or a J. The noun that may also be a verb has the first letter of either A, or O showing a noun made from a verb. If I go by the definition of an irregular verb, then all of mine are regular, as in they fit a specific pattern and do not deviate from it. I am just trying to not overload the learner with too much stuff in the document. The hardest part of the whole Shu verb system is you have to memorise which starting letter a word begins with depending on which of the two is used for the particular tense needed. Hope I answered your question correctly. I'm not a very learned grammar person. I do the best I can.Khemehekis wrote: ↑29 Jul 2021 01:15

Re: What I have been working on
/oʊ/ means the O sound in "hope" and "stone". The vowel in "cute" and "boot" is /u/.

Every language I work on or any project for that matter, is personal. However, while this language has no roots in fiction as far as some alien species on some planet somewhere, it is not so personal in the sense that I want to be the only one to know this language as I do not wish to carry on conversations with myself. Shu is for anyone who would like to learn it and communicate in it. It is my labor of love to the world of conlanging.

Doesn't look like a very up-to-date list. It has seldom-used words like "abactor", while missing terms like "beatbox", "transgender", "app", "smartphone", and even "blog"!Larryrl wrote: ↑01 Aug 2021 17:11Here is the link to the word list it is on my dropbox account. https://www.dropbox.com/s/vjgajedkfz8mr ... x.txt?dl=0Khemehekis wrote: ↑01 Aug 2021 08:44Which English word list did you find? Also, if you use that list, all you get is English words, and you might not remember all the meanings of those English words that you have to create words for. For instance, if you see the word "right" on the list, would you be sure you've thought, all on your own, of:
*right, as in the direction, opposite of left (My right eye hurts; it is several steps to your right)
*right, as in factually correct (I'm not sure that would give you the right answer)
*right, as in convenient (You came at the right time)
*right, the opposite of wrong in its sense of "equivocado" (Make sure you call the right number)
*right, as in morally just (Do the right thing)
*right, as in "in the right" (You were right, I was wrong)
*right, as in not mistaken (If I'm right about that, we should not six packages of hot dogs)
*right, as in directly/straight (The bullet went right through his heart)
*right, to "immediatize" an adverb (I'll be right back; right here, right now)
*right, as in undeniable freedom (Elizabeth Cady Stanton fought for women's rights)
*right, as in the conservative part of the political spectrum (John Kerry was to the right of Howard Dean; Jerry Falwell is one of the major figures of the Religious Right)
*right?, the sentence tag (You picked that shirt up at Goodwill, right?)
*the phrase "right away"
*the phrase "all right"
?
How about I send you the Landau Core Vocabulary instead? It disambiguates meanings, and covers the various types of semantic distinctions real languages make for the various English words on the list. Just let me know whether you'd like it as an email or a series of PM's.
