I seem to prefer the sound of shorter words and simpler phoneme inventories [:D]

Idea for a Orc/Dwarf lang

Consonants:
p k q ʔ
ɸ x χ ʍ h
ʟ̥
ʟ ʀ w

Vowels:
ɑ ɒ
ɑ̃ ɒ

Syllable structure: CVC where C stands for one consonant or any two-consonant cluster with increasing sonority (yes in coda as well).

Why does this look dwarfish/orcish to you? Is it inspired by Tolkien?

I'm just trying having "ugly" sounds, much gutterals.

Ah, I see. I like how the vowels are also 'guttural'.

Since you have *some* remnant of labials, might adding /ɯ u/ suit your fancy?

Also, it faintly reminds me of the proto-form of my current project.

/m n ŋ/
/p t k/
/ɸ β x ɣ/
/l ɾ/

/i u/

A consonant inventory with affricates. (Allophones) appear between vowels.

t͡θ c͡ç k͡x (θ ç x)
p t c k (β ð ʝ ɣ)
m n ɲ ŋ
mṼ nṼ ɲṼ ŋṼ
l ʎ

A sister language to my current project. I don't plan to do anything with it.

/m (m: m̥ mb*) n (n: n̥ nd*) ŋ (ŋ: ŋ̊ ŋg*)/
<m (mm mh mb) n (nn nh nd) ñ (ññ ñh ñg)>
/p (p: pʰ mp) t (t: t͡s nt) k (k: kʰ ŋk)/
<p (pp ph mp) t (tt th nt) k (kk kh ñk)>
/h/
<h>
/l (l: ɬ lˀ*) ɾ (r ɾ̥ ɾˀ*)/
<l (ll lh lt) r (rr rh rt)>
/w (w̃* wˀ* ʍ*) j (j̃* jˀ* ç*)/
<w (nw tw hw) y (ny ty hy)>

/i u e o a/
<i u e o a>
/i: u: e: o: a:/
<ii uu ee oo aa>
/ĩ ũ ẽ õ ã/
<in un en on an>
/iˀ uˀ eˀ oˀ aˀ/
<it ut et ot at>
/iʰ uʰ eʰ oʰ aʰ/
<ih uh eh oh ah>

Phonemes in parenthesis only exist intervocally, having evolved from the merger of clusters. However, some clusters (those with an asterisk next to them) result from the agglutinative merger of current words. Nasalized, glottalized, and breathy vowels only exist at word coda. Initial /h/ is falling out of use, so is optional.

This is an idea I've been playing with tentatively named Khrâmûr, heavily inspired by Tolkien because circumflex. To me it ends up looking kinda Vietnamese meets Black Speech which I'm happy with.

/m n ŋ/ <m n ng>
/p b t d k g/ <p b t d k g>
/ɸ β θ ð x ɣ/ <ph bh th dh kh gh>
/ɹ s/ <r s>

There are three vowel qualities |i u a|, which have three potential tone-length values; short high (5), long near-high (44) and short neutral (anywhere from 1 to 3). |u| only exists as a long vowel and |i| as a short vowel, so the vowel phonemes are [í i úː áː á a] written í i û â á a.

Syllable structure tends towards monosyllabic words with a complex onset and a coda, due to the following rules:
1. All syllables with short vowel nuclei must be followed by a consonant
2. All syllables with long vowel nuclei must begin with a consonant
3. Onsets may be up to three consonants and codas up to two. Onsets may be voiceless (of the structure [ɸ,θ,x,s][p,t,k,ɸ,θ,x,s][ɹ]), voiced ([β,ð,ɣ,s][m,n,ŋ,b,d,g,β,ð,ɣ][ɹ]) or nasal ([m,n,ŋ][p,b,t,d,k,g,ɸ,β,θ,ð,x,ɣ]). Codas may be any of /m n ŋ β ð ɣ s ɹβ ɹð ɹɣ/.

Some (as yet meaningless) example words are "khthrâ bûrgh kís dhâ ngû gâám ntardh mthûrdhkhim khrâmûr mbûakh", phonetically [xθr̥au̯44 buːrɣ44 cis5 ðau̯44 ŋeu̯44 gaː44ɣam̥5 n̥tarð1 mθuːrð44çim1 xr̥aː53muːɹ44 mbuː44βax1].

I made a consonant phonology a couple of months ago. I usually go with small-ish consonant phonologies, but I wanted to make a really big one. I've never used it.

/m mʷ n nʷ n̥ ɲ ɲʷ ɲ̥/
/p b bʷ t d dʷ c ʝ ʝʷ k kʷ g gʷ q qʷ ʡ/
/pʰ bʰ bʰʷ tʰ dʰ kʰ kʰʷ gʰ gʰʷ qʰ/
/t͡s t͡sʷ d͡z d͡zʷ/
/t͡sʰ t͡sʰʷ d͡zʰ d͡zʰʷ/
/s z x χ ħ/
/l ʎ/
/j w/

For some time I've imagined a consonant inventory that starts out like this:

/m n ŋ/
/p t k/

With a five-vowel system, in which unstressed front and back vowels become [j] and [w] respectively, leading to the coalescence of coronals and velars with following [j] to form [c] and [ɲ], becoming phonemicized since the original PoA is irrecoverable in certain contexts

The syllable structure if (C)V(C), resulting in the following potential clusters:

/NN/ - these simply assimilate to the place of the second nasal, becoming geminate /mː nː ɲː ŋː/
/NC/ - these assimilate to the place of the stop, and the stop voices, becoming /ᵐb ⁿd ᶮɟ ᵑg/
/CC/ - these assimilate to the place of the following consonant, becoming voiceless geminates /pː tː cː kː/
/CN/ - these probably remain as clusters for some time, but later undergo various assimilatory processes

And the original intervocalic stops are voiced or become lax in some way. Eventually giving the following consonant inventory:

/m n ɲ ŋ/
/mː nː ɲː ŋː/
/p t c k/ [b d ɟ g]
/ᵐb ⁿd ᶮɟ ᵑg/

+ a series of CN clusters

This system would then evolve in a variety of ways in various daughter languages

Another sketch of mine. A phoneme inventory for a language called "180". Can you guess why it's called liked that?

Vowels
/ĩ y u/ <ị y u>
/e ẽ o õ/ <e ẹ o ọ>
/ʌ ɔ/ <ʌ ɔ>
/a/ <a>

Consonants
/m n ŋ/ <m n n̩>
/ɓ p b t d k q/ <ɓ p b t d k q>
/f s z x ʁ h/ <f s z x ṛ h>
/l j ɥ w/ <l ȷ ɥ w>

<aɓɓau> [aɓ:au]
<ȷaȷf> [jajf]

The 40 onsets of Chhuowòta are as follows:

Code: Select all

Nasal m n
Plain stop p pr t ts tł ch k kr kł
Aspirated stop ph prh th tsh tłh chh kh krh kłh
Voiced stop b br bl dr dl j g gr gl
Fricative f s rh ł sh x h
Approximant w r l y
And these are the rhymes:

Code: Select all

u e a ai au
i ie ia i iu
uu uo ua ui uu
yu yue - yu yu
The IPA values may be revealed one day. Enjoy!

A Similar idea I once had for a proto-lang.

Onsets
/m mʲ mʷ n ɲ nʷ/
/p pʲ pʷ t c tʷ k kʲ kʷ/
/b bʲ bʷ d ɟ dʷ g gʲ gʷ/
/ts tɕ tsʷ kx gɣ/
/dz dʑ/
/tɬ/
/dɮ/
/f fʲ fʷ s ɕʲ sʷ x ç hʷ/
/v vʲ vʷ z ʑʲ/
/ɬ/
/j w r l/

Nuclei
/i u/
/ɛ ɔ/
/ɑ/

Codas
/ʔ/
/N/ nasalizes a preceding vowel and is usually deleted.
/H/ lengthens the preceding vowels and is usually deleted.

Phoneme inventory for a lang with South-Nigerian features.

Implosives and (not-so-Nigerian) prestopped resonants.
p t k k͡p
ɓ ɗ ɠ ɠ͡ɓ
β ɹ ɣ w
p͡m t͡n k͡ŋ kp͡ŋm
m n ŋ ŋ͡m
t͡l c͡j
l j

Seven-vowel system with (+/-) nasalization, (high/low) tone, and (long/short) length.
i u
e o
ɛ ɔ
a

Just some kind of random phonology that I guess is maybe kinda like if Basque and Haida had a baby or whatever?
