Ongshv́ [ˈɔ̃.x͡yː], Language of Outsiders

Post by yangfiretiger121 »

Ongshv́ is the language spoken in Fiúgham's non-Lantin-speaking clergy. Like most of the inventories for my conlangs, this came from a rather simple idea. Specifically, it came from the idea of a Dravidian language with the dental fricatives. This is its most recent evolution. The most significant difference between this version and one a recent as yesterday is the simplification of the lamial vowel (mistakenly called apical vowels by Earth's linguists) system, which had r-colored monophthongs, nasal monophthongs, and diphthogs in that version. I haven't figured out the specifcs about onset clusters yet.

Consonants
/p b t d ʈ ɖ k g/ [ɱ c ɟ]
<p b t d tt dd k g> <m k g>
/t̻͡s̪ d̻͡z̪ ʈ͡ʂ ɖ͡ʐ t͡ɕ d͡ʑ/ [k͡x ɡ͡ɣ]
<c z cc zz ch zh> <ch zh>
/f s̪ θ ʂ ɕ h/ [v z̪ ð ʐ ʑ x ɦ]
<f s th ss sh h> <f s th ss sh sh h>
/m n̪ ɳ/ [ɲ ŋ]
<m n nn> <yn ng>
/l̪ ɭ ɾ̪ r̪/ [ɽ]
<l ll r rr> <r>
/j w/
<y w>

Vowels
Parenthetical pairs represent phones that differ from their parent phonemes
[ᵫ, ᵫː] represent long and short variants of the vowel in few, when pronounced with carry-over friction [f͡y]
[ʮ, ʮː] represent long and short variants of the vowel in soon, when pronounced with carry-over friction [s͡uːn]
Syllabic consonants
Lamial vowels
(/ʋ̩ʷ/ [ᵫ]) (/v̩ʷ/ [ᵫː]) (/ɻ̍ʷ/ [ʮ]) (/ɻ̍˔ʷ/ [ʮː])
<v v́ x x́>

Nasal vowels
(/ɲ̍/ [ɛ̃]) (/ŋ̍/ [ɔ̃])
<eyn ong>

Oral vowels
Monophthongs
/ɐ ɐː e̞ e̞ː i iː o̞ o̞ː u uː/
<a á e é i í o ó u ú>

Diphthongs
(/ɐȏ̞/ [ɐɔ̯]) (/ɐːȏ̞/ [ɐːɔ̯]) /e̞u̯ e̞ːu̯/
<ao áo eu éu>

Edit: Should I use the vowel system above, one including the nasal vowels below, or something in between?

Nasal vowels
(/ɐɲ̍/ [ã]) (/ɐŋ̍/ [ɒ̃]) (/iɲ̍/ [ɪ̃]) (/ɻ̍ʷŋ̍/ [ũ]) (/uŋ̍/ [ʊ̃]) (/ʋ̩ʷɲ̍/ [ỹ])
<ayn ang iyn xng ung vyn>

Phonotactics
Allophony
[f, s̪, θ, ʂ, ɕ, h → v, z̪, ð, ʐ, ʑ, ɦ] between a vowel other than [ɔ̃] and another vowel, with [ɔ̃] triggering [t͡ɕ, d͡ʑ, ɕ → k͡x, ɡ͡ɣ, x]
[k, g → c, ɟ] adjacent to [ɛ̃]
[m → ɱ] in /t̻͡s̪m, s̪m/ clusters
/ɲ̍, ŋ̍/ are [ɛ̃, ɔ̃] before consonants and finally and [ɲ, ŋ] elsewhere. /ɲ̍, ŋ̍/ are forbidden finally after vowels. To aid understanding, [ɲ, ŋ] are <yn, ng>, and [ɛ̃, ɔ̃] <eyn, ong>
[ɾ̪ → ɽ] in /ʈɾ̪, ɖɾ̪/ clusters
[o̞ → ɔ] in /ɐȏ̞, ɐːȏ̞/ diphthongs

Syllable structure
(C(C))V(C), with open syllables favored and only the clusters below allowed

Simple onset
All simple onsets are allowed

Onset clusters
Palatals are forbidden from clusters
any non-palatal plosive, affricate, or voiceless fricatve + /w/
/p, b, t̪, k, g, f, θ/ + /ɾ̪, l̪/
/d̪, ɖ/ + /ɾ̪/
/t̻͡s̪, s̪/ + /p, m, n̪, l̪/
/d̻͡z̪/ + /l̪/
/ʈ/ + /ɾ̪, ɭ/
/ʂ/ + /m, ɳ, ɾ̪, ɭ/

Nucleus
Any vowel may act as the nucleus
any retroflex consonant may only take /ŋ̍, ɐ, ɐː, ɐȏ̞, ɐːȏ̞, o̞, o̞ː, u, uː/
any non-retroflex, non-palatal affricate or fricative may take any lamial vowel

Coda
All consonants but [m, ɱ, n̪, ɳ, ɾ̪, r̪] are permitted in coda

Edit: Edit 1: Added nucleus
Edit 2: Added in a question about vowel systems and new proposal for one
Edit 3: Added retroflex stops and retrofelx flap

Nucleus
[ᵫ, ᵫ, i, iː, e̞, e̞ː, ɛ̃, e̞u̯, e̞ːu̯] can't appear immediately after [ʈ, ɖ, ʈ͡ʂ, ɖ͡ʐ, ʂ, ʐ, ɳ, ɭ]
Are those all vowels that can appear as nuclei of a syllable? There are more vowels, however.

You could have some syllables is CVC sentence for phonotactics.

Currently, every vowel, [ɐ, ɐː, ɐɔ̯, ɐːɔ̯, i, iː, e̞, e̞ː, ɛ̃, e̞u̯, e̞ːu̯, o̞, o̞ː, ɔ̃, u, uː, ᵫ, ᵫ, ʮ, ʮː], can appear as the nucleus. I just forgot to menton that because I was pulling from a spreadsheet that just mentioned the restriction. Also, I know sylable structure is (C(C))V(C), but I needed to figure out how to explain the interactions non-nasals, non-palatals and the applicable of /l̪, ɭ, ɾ̪/ using phonemes.
