Rjasaquj languages

Post by Flavia »

Rjasaquj languages are my new diachronic language family. The "main" language is Səñi (the name may change).
Proto-Rjasaquj phonology
/p t tʲ k kʲ kʷ q/
/ɸ θ θʲ s sʲ ɬ ɬʲ x xʲ xʷ X h/
/m n nʲ/
/l lʲ r rʲ j w/
/ɪ ɪː ə əː ɑ ɑː u uː/ <i ī e ē a ā u ū>
CV[m n nʲ l lʲ r rʲ j w]
Proto-Rjasaquj was isolating, but most descendant languages are agglutinative or even fusional.
Sound changes from PRj to Old Səñi
*p > b > gʷ > kʷ'
*t > d > t'
*tʲ > tt > t
*k > g > k'
*kʲ > kk > k
*kʷ > kʷ
*q > ŋ
*ɸ > β > ɣʷ > kxʷ'
*θ > s > z > ts'
*θʲ > sʲ > s
*s > ɬ > ɮ > tɬ'
*sʲ > ɬʲ > ɬ
*ɬ > ɮ > tɬ'
*ɬʲ > ɬ
*x > ɣ > kx'
*xʲ > x
*xʷ > xʷ
*X > hh > h
*h > h > ɦ > ʔh
*m > ŋʷ
*n > n > n̥ʼ ???
*nʲ > n̥ > n
*l > l
*lʲ > ll > ɬ
*r > ɮ͡r [voiced alveolar lateral trill] > tɬr̥'
*rʲ > rr > ɬ͡r̥
*j > j
*w > w
Vowel harmony to the last vowel in the word:

Code: Select all

PRj	Front	Back
*i	i u
*u	i u
*e	e o
*a	æ a
Last vowel weakening and new vowel phonemicizing:
Short V > 0 / _#
Long V > short V / _#
Vj, Vw > i u /_# (sometimes non-harmonic)
VC > i~u (dep. on harmony) /_#
Phonology of old Señi:

Code: Select all

n n' ŋ ŋʷ
t t' k k' kʷ kʷ'
ts' tɬ' tɬr'	kx' kxʷ'	h
s ɬ ɬr x xʷ
l j w

Code: Select all

i	u
e	o

The name of the language in itself was *rʲāsaquj > ɬrāts'aŋi

Old Səñi developed conjugation from PRj pronouns. PRj verbs inflected only for voice.
PRj pronouns were:
1sg. θʲā > sā
2sg. ɬum > tɬ'u
3sg. and 3pl. rēlʲ > tɬr'i
1pl. kan > gu
2pl. quj > ngi
and alike were the subject & object prefixes
sā~sǣ
tɬ'um~tɬ'im
tɬr'ōɬ~tɬr'ēɬ
gan~gæn
nguj~ngij
Later, in middle Səñi this became a direct-inverse system with portmanteau prefixes.
PRj passive prefix was ma which became ngwa~ngwæ in Old Səñi, appearing always after the person prefixes. Old Səñi didn't have inflection for tense, it appeared in Middle Səñi.

I like the direction of vowel harmony. That's what happens synchronically in Assamese.
