You know very well that TRAP refers to a group of words with the same phonetic pattern, and not solely to the word trap itself...Stammalor wrote:Never heard anyone from the north of England? Or from California? (I recently listened to some Californian actress, and notice her very open pronunciations of word like 'after'.) Even some characters in MLP (not all of them) have very open a's. (In my judgement, closer to [a] than [æ])
I have heard plenty of actors/actersses from both California and northen Britain speak in movies and such, but I just can't remeber if any of them ever said the word "Trap" with a [a], I cant even remeber any of hem ever said that word, it is not such a common word, at least not in the films I watch

When i knew nothing about phonetics, I liked [ʋ], [l], and [ɪ], which are phonemes and graphemes in my L1.

Re: Favorite Phoneme!
I just fell in love with /tʷ/.
Re: Favorite Phoneme!
I totally agree about [ɒ]. It sounds lovely in Farsi as well. I'm not really into vowels, because I'm an ESL teacher and they cause me a lot of grief, but I do also like the [ə].Celinceithir wrote:My favourite vowel (currently at least - this changes a lot) would almost certainly be ɨ, with ɒ a recent favourite too (loving how it sounds in Hungarian.)
My favorite consonants are definitely [ʂ] and [ʐ]. Also [ʙ], which seems to be a favorite here. A really long time ago I came across this page and was really impressed by the onomatopoeic power of the sentence /t͡ʙ̥unt͡ʙ̥ʉ na/ which means, appropriately, "It is a helicopter" in Oro Win.

Since i like /N/, i also like those clusters. But they're annoying when /N/ is not phonemic.smrk wrote:This is slightly off topic, but my least favorite consonant cluster is /ŋk/. Or /ŋg/. Ew.

I like the new coronal plosive in Wateu. I recently changed it from a dental stop (t̪, often slightly velarised, t̪ˠ) to a laminal, palatalised one: t̻ʲ. In unstressed syllables it can be an affricate: [ʧ] or [ʨ].
I also like the diphthong /ɔ͡ə̯/ (as found in some dialects of English). Hope I could include that one in a conlang...

I'm gaining a love for all things relating to the Epiglottal Trill.
Also, my favorite consonant cluster is probably the plain old [sk]. Simple, but it sounds so nice!

Also, /ɔuː/ from Faroese. Actually, pretty much any Faroese diphthong.
