Post by Arayik Tonikyan »

If Balto Slavic langs stayed centum, would the rest of phonology be impacted in Slavic languages?

If you were willing to see through the later developments (for instance, Slavic open syllable 'constraints', palatalisations, etc.) then not much.
Conlangs in progress:
Modern Khotanese
Modern Gandhari
?? - Japonic language in the Mekong Delta
Locna - Indo-European language in N. Syria
Wexford Norse
A British romlang, &c.

If you mean the Balto-Slavic satemization only was skipped, then Slavic wouldn't look that much different. The various waves of palatization would have affected the PIE palato-velars anyway. You would just see lots of /tS/ where modern Slavic languages have /s/. Latvian would be in much the same situation. Lithuanian, I believe, would be the only modern Balto-Slavic language with any PIE palato-velars realized as actual velars.
I did it. I made the world's worst book blog.
