Your guys’s

Post by eldin raigmore »

People in the “you guys” zone seem to be having a growing fad of doubling down on the genitive or possessive marking of their version of the second person plural pronoun.
Instead of “you guys’” they’re starting to say “your guys’s” or sometimes “your guys’”.

(People in the “y’all” zone say “y’all’s”. Only one genitive marking.)

Has anyone else noticed this?

When and/or where did it start, if anyone knows?

...

What similar phenomena have occurred in natlangs?

I know about the double pluralization in “child” —> “childer” —> “children”.

And there’s the duplicated/migrated rhotic in “thesaurus” —> “treasure”.

Are there other examples that are more closely reminiscent of “your guys’s” ?

As mentioned before in other threads, colloquial German has a 'triple past', where the past is formed periphrastically with the auxiliary haben + a participle. Additionally some verbs can be inflected for past, which include the verb 'haben'. In the triple past you apply the periphrastic construction twice and then additionally inflect the auxiliary for past tense.
