Ah. Possibly a slight misunderstanding: although veur a magrir emphatically does not mean "starve", the usual meaning of magrir alone is "starve".shimobaatar wrote: ↑29 Mar 2020 19:01 So it's not "starve", "diet", or "exercise". Hmm… does magrir generally have a positive connotation?

Ah, I did misunderstand, then.
Well, is the meaning of the entire phrase generally positive?

Yes, I would say so. (The misunderstanding was also on me, definitely )shimobaatar wrote: ↑30 Mar 2020 01:33 Ah, I did misunderstand, then.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
is it something along the lines of "to do penance"? ie "to fast"? or is it more just "to live humbly"?
Spoiler:
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
None of those.
Perhaps pondering the middle word of the phrase might help?

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Oh, I had kind of just assumed it was just there to connect the verbs and didn't have much meaning itself:
Is it a preposition?shimobaatar wrote: ↑26 Feb 2020 14:27 Could the phrase be translated as something like "to X to (do) X", then?
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Yes, from Latin ad "at, to, towards".shimobaatar wrote: ↑31 Mar 2020 00:37 Oh, I had kind of just assumed it was just there to connect the verbs and didn't have much meaning itself:

Is there more about it to figure out, given what you said about the middle word potentially helping us?Jackk wrote: ↑31 Mar 2020 01:08Yes, from Latin ad "at, to, towards".shimobaatar wrote: ↑31 Mar 2020 00:37 Oh, I had kind of just assumed it was just there to connect the verbs and didn't have much meaning itself:

I may have overstated the matter to be honest – bshimobaatar wrote: ↑31 Mar 2020 02:30 Is there more about it to figure out, given what you said about the middle word potentially helping us?
it may help to know that the meaning is more like "up to, until" in this expression, but a magrir is a particularly idiomatic construction.

Hmm… this is a tricky one. Maybe something like "to live life to the fullest"?
