One thing

Post by Khemehekis »

I want to see how different languages handle this idiomatic expression.

:eng: It would be one thing if he had apologized, but he didn't even say he was sorry.
:con: Kankonian: Is likasen *ines ham yakhen wan du*ug, am wan os au oyezen az wan as weviya.
I might+PRESENT+PAST understand that if+PAST he apologize but he not even say+PAST that he is sorry
"I might have understood that if he had apologized, but he didn't even say that he was sorry."

Why don't these ever translate nicely? :(

I have to think of the conlang translataion.

:eng: It would be one thing if he had apologized, but he didn't even say he was sorry.

Image Silvish

Illy ettrouye etté contrassi s' qu' î s' fus esscûzé, mê l' a mimmou pas dì qu' î s' doulouye.
[iʎ.ʎˑɛˈtʁu.jə ʔɛˈte kɔ̃ˈtʁɑs.si skiˈsfys ʔɛs.skyˈze | ˈmɛː ləˈmɛ̃m.mu ˈpɑs ˈdi kiː.zduˈlu.jə]

It would be one thing if he had apologized, but he didn't even say he was sorry.

Back-translated, the Silvish reads, "It would have been otherwise if he had apologized, but …" It expresses "otherwise" with contrassi (<- :lat: contra + ad + sic), a derivation unattested in other Romance languages. I think it coexists with âtraman (cf. :fra: autrement), but I haven't settled on the details.

This sentence demonstrates all three euphonic forms of the third-person singular masculine pronoun. You have the prevocalic form illy, then the preconsonantal form î, and finally the prevocalic form used with unstressed verbs l'. The feminine counterpart behaves similarly with ell', ella and l'.

This idiom does not exist in Atili in this sense, but there is a similar idiom, used to express that you wish something had gone a different way.

Ë vahdalivísoto vínä vasavíjense, siné dóvnyete ivahvasavídasta.
/e vəχ.da.lɪ'vi.so.tʰo 'vi.na va.sə'vi.ʁɛn.se | si'ne 'dov.ɲe.tʰe ɪ.vəχ.va.sə'vi.das.tʰa/

"He/She didn't even put down his/her pride, but I would show him/her the path."

The second part of this sentence is an idiom that originated as a malapropism of the following quotation from the Atili religious texts:

Kwánë dóvnyete sénzul ivahvasavidástu zíu-zíu, ítä e sálva kosódakta tínus.
'kɔ̯ɑ.ne 'dov.ɲe.tʰe 'sen.zul ɪ.vaχ.və.sa.vɪ'das.tʰu 'zi.u 'zi.u | 'i.tʰa e 'sal.va kɔ'so.dakʰ.tʰa 'ti.nus

New words for this challenge:
Spoiler:
hemrayā adj. - acceptable
Etymology: hem- adjectivizer prefix "-able" + grayāme "to accept", the verb itself had to be coined as well and is a causative derivation from grāme "to take"

Ner ās kānya. phrase - I'm sorry.
Etymology: "(to me) is pain", here used with the narrative mood.
