Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Is it something like "rich"? As in, "I'm not jealous of anyone else because I already have so much wealth of my own"?
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Well, it's more an emotion than a descriptor of wealth, but this particular emotion (or perhaps mood is a better word?) would be associated with wealthy people.shimobaatar wrote: ↑25 Feb 2020 18:38 Is it something like "rich"? Oh, haha, I guess that just goes to show you what I think of when I read "associated with wealthy people".

lol
I mean, this isn't a game without the fun sound changes. Do sometimes wish I could get away with killing the <n> in the in- prefix though, in Boral, but unfortunately the area it's in isn't very good for that.
Okay, hmm, words...
veur a magrir
/ˌvawʀ a mɛjˈʀɪʀ/

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Could the phrase be translated as something like "to X to (do) X", then?
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
That's a rather literal translation, but yes.shimobaatar wrote: ↑26 Feb 2020 14:27 Could the phrase be translated as something like "to X to (do) X", then?

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Oh! It is, and indeed there's f.ex. ivan < infantem, its just that the in- prefix isn't retained productively, and the reborrowed form keeps the <n>.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
But you could just drop the /n/ in the reborrowed form, surely?
Dutch, after all, loses a lot of unstressed coda /n/s, as do IIRC some English dialects, and Old Norse lost a huge number too. And of course French lost almost all of them (transfered into nasality, but that's easily dropped). I don't think it would be out of keeping for the area to lose unstressed coda /n/ in particular.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Sure, I could do many things. I think, though, that you overestimate my discontent, haha – I have many similar idle wishes on occasion (which are certainly mutually exclusive), and to do any of them isn't worth the brevity of the thought.
Your thorough analysis of the situation is nonetheless interesting and appreciated. I shall have to think about adding "loses unstressed coda nasals" to one of the western dialects...

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
It's the wrong region, but some varieties of Arpitan actually have a similar situation, where they've dropped coda nasals, and then nasalization (regardless of stress); and then they've borrowed words with nasal vowels. The dictionary I'm using only gives incomplete data, but the result for some of these varieties seems to be a mixture of in-s, both the inherited reflex and the borrowed form. For example, a lot of entries for the dialect of Les Marches, Savoie, have either the inherited or the borrowed form, not both; but then indirect is translated as êdirèkte /ɛdiˈʁe̞kte̞/ or indirèkte /ɛ̃diˈʁe̞kte̞/.
