Epic Sentence Translation Thread

Post by masako »

http://watchout4snakes.com/wo4snakes/Ra ... omSentence

Simple, click the link above and post the translation of the random paragraph in your conlang. Extra internet points for including script, IPA, and gloss. Word to the wise, most of these (actually all of these) are grammatically correct, but semantically nonsensical like the famous "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously."

I'll start:

꼬지 나허 고나구 다란고
/ⁿkoːt͡ʃɪ naːɦe konaːkʷa talaᵑko/
nkotsi nahe konakua talanko
march inside dress-all return-CONT
Into every dress returns the march.

That's strange. I would think that theme would be the hard thing to translate given its various meanings of "setting" or "subject" or even "musical melody"

Wumiwan fe'ei wirn kinyenil.
INAN-worry earth about galaxy-SG
The ground worries about a galaxy.

Not sure what that means, but it sounds profound.

(new word: kinyeni, 'galaxies'. Singular kinyenil is 'galaxy, Milky Way'. Historically, the term referred solely to the Milky Way, but had broadened to all galaxies in modern times; the more common term for the Milky Way today is Mus Paitanelos 'starry road')

Well, the nice thing about translating English into a not-too-exotic romlang is that a lot of shared Latinate borrowings have the same semantic space. Silvish "tema" means all the same things as English "theme".

This was my thinking.

I think it stands alone. And I like the ass/arse conflation here in American English. I personally find solace in the universe being run by a giant cosmic set of buttocks. YRMV [;)]

zurčēyæ is the generic verb for making music with any musical instrument

I couldn't believe the spookiness of this phrase, so I googled it.
Weirdly, the Universe answered me with this:

The altogether signals to the strange marmot with flashing light.

In standard Ganur Lon, the noun <gatjint> is usually only found in the adverbial <li'gatjint>, meaning "all in all" or "altogether." It contains a verb <int> that is not used in standard Ganur Lon. Due to the lack of other uses for <gatjint> or <int>, the adverbial is often simply written as "ligatjint," though both forms are written.
