The twelve European zodiac signs

Post by Iyionaku »

Inspired by my last post in Lexember, I thought this could be an interesting translation challenge on its own.

porce [ˈpoɾkə] - Taurus
prenîyi [pɾəˈniːɕi] - Gemini

Wipe the glass. This is the usual way to start, even in the days, day and night, only a happy one.

tažžapa - zodiac sign (lit., drawing in the sky)
This word has the suffix -ppa "celestial object", which appears on the names of all planets and moons, including their planet's own moon. I figure that it would make sense for the constellations to also have that suffix. Because of this, the roots used to the derive the stems can be very short, since they are part of a small vocabulary, only containing other words for celestial objects.

pappa - Aries ("sheep")
bampa - Taurus ("milking cow")
poppa - Gemini ("twins")
pappapa - Cancer ("crab")
lappupa - Leo ("wildcat")
šuppa - Virgo ("maiden")
šabba - Libra ("scale")
lappivapa - Scorpio ("scorpion tail")
puppopa - Sagittarius ("of the hunter")
brappa - Capricornus ("to push with the horns")
panampa - Aquarius ("cupbearer")
pampa - Pisces ("alewife")

I had a specific word for cupbearer once but I cant get to that dictionary now. The one I used here just means "water shoulderer" plus the celestial object suffix. /šabba/ "scale" uses an alternate suffix, -bba, instead of -ppa, because the word i coined first collided with the word for Virgo.
Kavunupupis, šiŋuputata.

Image Silvish

zodyâco nmc [zəˈdjɑː.kə] - zodiac
planéta nfc [pla̝ˈne.ta] - zodiac sign

moûtoû nmc [muˈtuː] - Aries
bové nmc [bəˈve] - Taurus
bèssou nmnpl [ˈbɛs.su] - Gemini
hàncro nmc [ˈhɑ̃ŋ.kʁə] - Cancer
lyoû nmc [ˈʎˑuː] - Leo
vìrje nfn [ˈviʁ.ʒə] - Virgo
balànche nfcpl [ba̝ˈlɑ̃ɲ.ʃə] - Libra
scorpyoû nmc [skɔˈpjuː] - Scorpio
archu nmn [ʔɑˈʃy] - Sagittarius
hêvra nfc [ˈhɛː.vʁa] - Capricorn
evû nmc [ʔəˈvyː] / toupîn-a nfc [tuˈpɛ̃ː.a] - Aquarius
pessoû nmcpl [pɛˈsuː] - Pisces

Zodiac sign names are largely translations of the Latin terms. The name for "Aquarius" is the one where there's the most disagreement. Evû is etymologically equivalent to Aquarius, but in Silvish it means "sink". Toupîn-a gives a somewhat closer image because it refers to a large clay vessel, but a toupîn-a normally holds butter or lard, so the connection with water is lost.

Cancer, Aquarius and Pisces can be grouped together as la bbèttye d' êje [lɑˈbɛt.tjə ˈdɛː.ʒə], "the water creatures".

Pisces: Peiçis [pæi̯s] (pl. of peiçi, from L piscis "fish")

All pretty boring translations of the Latin.
