No one can understand this language

Post by Dormouse559 »

A friend shared a video about Georgian, and I decided to take a look, even though it looked clickbaity. I didn't make it past the first sentence [>_<] But that sentence was grammatically interesting, so here it is, slightly modified:

:eng: English
What you're hearing is the Georgian language, which almost no one can read, speak or understand unless you're Georgian.

Try substituting your conlang/-people's name for "Georgian".

:fra: French

Ce que vous entendez, c'est la langue française, que presque personne ne lit, ni ne parle ni ne comprend à moins qu'on ne soit français.

What you're hearing is the French language, which almost no one can read, speak or understand unless you're French.

What you're hearing is the Silvish language, which almost no one can read, speak or understand unless you're Silvish.

Rethought word:
quase adv - almost (< Lat. quasī, ending influenced by Lat. → Sil. se "if")

Note:
So I don't forget, Silvish expresses "neither … nor" by placing ne before each list item. Ne may come from Latin nec or nōn or both; it's not clear. Either way, French speakers learning Silvish sometimes have trouble recognizing it as a conjunction since it looks and often sounds like French's generic negative particle ne. (It's me. I'm French speakers.)

What you're hearing is Paatherye, which almost nobody can read, speak or understand unless you're an Elf.

New/rethought words and structures:
Spoiler:
nilpāthes [nilˈpaːtʰes] - almost nobody
This is the allative case of nilpaythi "nobody"; "almost nobody" is thus expressed as "(going) to nobody"

Ø - or (inclusive or, between verbs)
I decided that a list of verbs in Paatherye does not require a special conjunction if it's not an exclusive or, unlike "and".

Furthermore I decided that there is no conjunction for "unless" and it's instead expressed with the conditional form of the negative verb, here "nayes".

I'm surprised to see the number of translations here that apply a second-person verb conjugation "you are" to the word "nobody." I would encourage people who have done this to consider whether this was intentional or just a translation of a quirk that leads English speakers to sometimes use "you" as a pronoun for the indefinite person for want of a gender-neutral third-person pronoun.

You are hearing Laakitlantu. To not be Tsaangkatu is to not understand it.

New words for this challenge: wit’a "ear," asiwit’a "to listen," asiwit’atla "to hear."

Note: I've omitted the part about being able to read because a) there is very little written Laakitlantu material and b) "understand" and "read" are usually both covered by the same or similar verbs (usually variations of atling, which in fact has the greatest number of English glosses in Laakitlantu, a possible tie being yuuts’a’ and a close third qusi).
