the.M.N.S recluse without book nor ink be.3SG alread in live.PRES.PPL a.M.O.S dead.M
"A recluse without books and ink is already in life a dead man."
  • anilers "hermit" or "recluse" comes from Middle Vissard ansiliairs /ãnhiˈljɛr/, a regular derivation from ansis, ansil /ãnˈhi(ː)/ "hermitage" (cf. modern anis, anil). This in turn comes from Old Vissard anseills, a borrowing from Old English ansetl /ˈɑːnˌsetl/. There's an inherreted Latin synonym ermite < ERĒMĪTA, but that has stronger religious connotations.
  • cens is an irregular descendant of SINE, conflated with ABSENTIA; the initial c- /s/ should reflect Old Vissard /t͡s/, but it is first seen only by the 16th century, by which time <c> was /s/ and <s> was /h/. Most likely it was a variant, originally only spoken, introduced to better distinguish it from en /ɛ̃/ "in".
  • enke "ink" is a borrowing from Old French enque. The native word was kuis, kuil in Middle Vissard, which appears to have dropped out of use due to its similarity with kus, kul "arse" – kuis was another Old English borrowing, in this case from cudele "cuttlefish". The Southey dialect refers to ink as pepe /ˈpep/, which may derive ultimately from POLYPUS.
