I am but dust and ashes

Post by Znex »

Rabbi Simcha Bunam of Pzhysha once said, "Everyone must have two pockets, so that he can reach into one or the other, according to his needs. In his right pocket are to be the words: 'For my sake was the world created', and in his left: 'I am but dust and ashes'."

These words refer to a statement made by Avraham in the Torah (Gen 18:27):
אָנֹכִ֖י עָפָ֥ר וָאֵֽפֶר׃
ᵓānōḵî ᶜāp̄ār wā=ᵓēp̄er
1SG dust and=ashes
"I am dust and ashes."

And a saying from the Talmud (Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5):
בִּשְׁבִילִי נִבְרָא הָעוֺלָם׃
bišḇîl-î niḇrā hā-ᶜōlām
for_the_sake_of-PREP.1SG <PASS.PF.3MSG>make DEF-world
"For my sake, the world was made."

I've pieced together a translation in Koine Greek below, partly from the Septuagint translation:
Spoiler:
ἐγὼ δέ εἰμι γῆ καὶ σποδός.
egō dé eimi gê kaì spodós
1SG.NOM but be.PRS.1SG earth.NOM and ashes.NOM
"But I am dust and ashes."

δι' ἐμὲ ἐποιήθη ὁ κόσμος.
dià emè e>poie<éthē ho kósmos
for 1SG.ACC.EMPH AOR>make<AOR.PASS.3SG DEF.M.SG.NOM world.NOM
"For me, the world was made."
And a translation in Quenya, just for fun:
Spoiler:
Inye asto ar litte.
1SG.EMPH dust and ash
"I am dust and ashes."

Nin akárie i eä.
1SG-DAT <PF>make.IMPRS DEF world
"For me, the world has been made."

Latin

dust.NOM and ash.NOM only am
"I am dust and ash only."

Prō mē mundus factus est.
for me.ABL world.NOM made.NOM is
"For me, the world was made."
(factus est is a past-tense construction, the present form would be "fit", a conjugation of fīō)

Spanish

No soy más que polvo y cenizas.
not am more than dust and ashes
"I am not more than dust and ashes."

Por mí el mundo se creó.
for me the world itself created.3SG

Well. It turns out I accidentally the whole thing. Not just the two sentences that actually were to be translated. That's what I get for not reading the assignment through.

So these are the two sentences to be kept in your pouches:

[mano semi ratoirumu muhikive:]
/ ˈmɑno ˈsemi ˈɹɑtoˌiɹumu ˈmuhikive /
ma-no semi ratoiru-mu muhi-ki-ve
1S-GEN for world-ACC create-PST-HSY

[ma sikoti to pisuna to sanina yakavo:]
/mɑ ˈsikoti to ˈpisunɑ to ˈsɑninɑ ˈjɑkɑvo/
ma sikoti to pisu-na to sani-na ya-ka-vo
1S.NOM only and dust-PTV and ash-PTV be-PRS-INFR

And here is, to coin a phrase, the whole megillah:

Posisano rapi-herenari Simoha Punamo iisiti sunokive hi [ñeku kaa mirimu uta soukavo· niyi hii huno kanemu au tosira au tosira pouta hopokavo· huno hemano vane: hano oke mirira siki suni yaka'~ [mano semi ratoirumu muhikive:] to vase mirira~ [ma sikoti to pisuna to sanina yakavo:]]

/ˈposisɑno ˈɹɑpiˌheɹenɑɹi ˈsimohɑ ˈpunɑmo ˈiːsiti ˈsunokive hi || ˈŋeku kɑː ˈmiɹimu ˈutɑ ˈsoukɑvo | ˈniji hiː ˈhuno ˈkɑnemu ɑu ˈtosiɹɑ ɑu ˈtosiɹɑ ˈpoutɑ ˈhopokɑvo | ˈhuno ˈhemɑno ˈvɑne || ˈhɑno ˈoke ˈmiɹiɹɑ ˈsiki ˈsuni ˈjɑkɑʔ || ˈmɑno ˈsemi ˈɹɑtoˌiɹumu ˈmuhikive || to ˈvɑse ˈmiɹiɹɑ || mɑ ˈsikoti to ˈpisunɑ to ˈsɑninɑ ˈjɑkɑvo/

Posisa-no rapi-herenari Simoha Punamo iisiti suno-ki-ve hi || ñeku kaa miri-mu u-ta sou-ka-vo | niyi hii huno kane-mu au tosi-ra au tosi-ra pou-ta hopo-ka-vo | huno hema-no vane || ha-no oke miri-ra siki suni ya-ka-' || ma-no semi ratoiru-mu muhi-ki-ve || to vase miri-ra || ma sikoti to pisu-na to sani-na ya-ka-vo

Posisa-GEN rapi-teacher.NOM Simoha.NOM Punamo.NOM once say-PST-HSY that.QUO || everyone.NOM two pouch-ACC have-INF must-PRS-INFR | so that ones.own hand-ACC xor other-INE xor other-INE put.in-INF can-PRS-INFR | ones.own need-GEN according.to || 3S.R-GEN right pouch-INE this.NOM sentence.NOM be-PRS-IMP || 1S-GEN for world-ACC create-PST-HSY || and left pouch-INE || 1S.NOM only and dust-PTV and ash-PTV be-PRS-INFR

Rabbi Simcha Bunam of Pzhysha once said, "Everyone must have two belt pouches, so that she can reach into one or the other, according to her needs. In her right pouch are to be the words: 'For my sake was the world created', and in her left: 'I am but dust and ashes'."

Áahàka·zàa ḷuhaıẓ halu.
[aʔˈçɑɢɐ‿ˌʃɑ ˈt͡ɬʊʝɐjt͡ʃ ˈçalv]
á<á>-hà(ka)=za<a#a>r̀ ḷuh<aı>ẓ hu<a#u>l
COP<EXCL>-only=1<OBL> dust<OBL> ash<OBL>

I am nothing but dust and ashes.

Áṭıàràx zàa ẓaìz.
[aˈtʼjɑrɑχ (ɐ)ʃɑ t͡ʃˤeʃ]
vŕ-ṭa<ıvr̀>ŕ-à-x za<a#a>r̀ ẓa<aì>z
INV-create<3.4>-CONC-VOL.INV 1<OBL> world<AGT>

The world was made for me.

Alternatively, arguably more secular (true passive, does not overtly ascribe a "creator" to the world):

Z·Áṭıârxax zàa ẓaìz.
[ˈʃ‿atʼjarχɑχ (ɐ)ʃɑ t͡ʃˤeʃ]
za=vŕ-ṭa<ıv>ŕ-x(a)-à-x za<a#a>r̀ ẓa<aì>z
BEN=INV-create<3>-ANTIP-CONC-VOL.INV 1<OBL> world<AGT>

The world was made for me.

Oh hey it's the inverse-antipassive-turned-regular-passive again... and because it's mutually exclusive with the regular benefactive construction, we get the "causative" benefactive that I should probably write something about one day. That's fun.
