Lexember 2016

Post by Lao Kou »

It's that time again! (posted a day early 'cause networks in China these last weeks have been the biggest moose-wang suck!)
cedh wrote:In case you haven't heard about this yet: It's a game with the purpose of expanding the lexicon of one's conlang, with an added social dimension. The rules are simple: For the duration of one month, every participant will create and publish one word per day, ideally with some short notes about etymology, semantics, or usage, possibly augmented by a glossed example sentence. Of course, you are encouraged to comment on other participants' words, or to let yourself be inspired by them.

Here's a more elaborate description of the game, adapted from Christophe Grandsire-Koevoets' blog:
Spoiler:
  • For the entire month of December, every day, once a day, create and publish a new word for one of your conlangs. The publication should contain the word, its definition, and whatever etymological and usage notes you feel like sharing. Examples are welcome but optional. :)
  • The created words should be everyday words relevant for the environment where the conlang is spoken (e.g. its conculture, if it has one). The idea is to identify semantic gaps in your conlang vocabulary, and fill them. So no jargon or technical terms, unless they are also used in daily life by your conlang speakers.
  • The created words should truly be new, i.e. new stems, new derivations and/or new compounds. Just adding a new meaning to an existing word doesn’t count... ;)
  • Using other people’s Lexember creations for inspiration is not only allowed, it’s encouraged! As is commenting on other people’s words. This should be a social event :). Don’t hesitate to link to the post that inspired your own creation when you publish it!
  • While the goal is to create and publish one word per day, we all know that December is home to various other social occasions, so it’s understandable if you are unable to publish your creations everyday. You can always make a catch-up post with two or more Lexember words at once...
  • Have fun! This should feel like a game, not a chore! :)
If you want to join the game, simply post your Lexember contributions in this thread.
C'mon, you know you want to. [B)]
You can also use various social media instead or in addition: There will be #Lexember hashtags on Twitter, Tumblr, and Google+.
I can't vouch for this, again. Perhaps cedh or someone else can provide the additional info for this year.
A happy Lexember to everyone!
Indeed! ♫ ♬ Deck the halls with boughs of morphemes, fa la la la la, la la la la! ♫ ♬ [:D]

Tisisito is in the middle of redoing its phonology but I would like to participate. Maybe I will use this as an excuse to start a new conlang? The 30 lexember entries would be the start, and I would build the rest around them.

I will try to commit to this as my new language has no words. Only grammar.

I have decided to go with Tisisito after all, and complete my Swadesh list. I can always adjust the words later, after all.

wap / wapo [wɑp / wɑpŏ] blood (from proto-Tisisito /βʷapʷɨ/ - ultimately from roots meaning "red/blood" and "wet")

It appears to be hard to find everyday words for Yélian, so I'll have to go for synonyms I suppose.

Yélian

árudal [ˈaːrʊdɐl] - process, procedure, command chain, instruction sequence
Noun of the conceptual class

Derived from arud (command) + process suffix -al

Irregular plural: árudaun

Example sentence:

Æ'ucval o'desputquot yiaubet árudalelros can Yéliania viyd a'Porquenien yimayceasʻi.
[œˈʔʊkvɐl ɔˈdɛspʊ̆tɔt ˈʃʲaʊ̯pbɛt ˈarʊdɐlˌɛlrɔs kɐn ˈʃɛljanja va̯iːd apɔɾˈkɛnjɛn ʃimaʃkəˈasʔi]
DEF.CONC-annexion DEF.GEN-province-new PST-often be.3SG process-long for Shelliania because DEF.ANIM-Porquenian-PL PST-refuse-capitulate-3PL
The annexion of a new province was often a long process for Shelliania because the Porquenians refused to capitulate.

An unnamed lang

December 1st

sáhha - foot

I'm going to participate in Lexember this year with my so far unnamed lang which I've been calling "2xthe" for now. Hopefully I can make up a good name for it during the course of this month. From the 24th to the 31st of this month I won't be at home though so I probably won't be able to get words for those days. This lang doesn't really have any vocabulary as of yet so I will likely mostly post more basic words.

Well, in addition to adding words to my few actually stable languages, I'm also going to be adding Sardinian words to Wiktionary every day, in an effort to improve coverage of the language. Since I likely won't have access tommorrow, saturday and sunday, I'm going to write three days worth of stuff today!

Day 1-4
:it-sa: Sardinian
jerru - winter
joba - pair
janna - door (Dammit! Already done!)
boidare - to pay

Don't know what langs I have that I can add words to.
