Lexember 2018

Post by shimobaatar »

Happy December everyone!

Welcome to Lexember, a monthlong game that challenges players to create at least one new word in one of their conlangs daily from the 1st through the 31st of December, and to post it here in this thread. This is the 7th year of the Lexember tradition, and its 6th year on the CBB!

If you miss a day, you could always post two words the next day. Sometimes, players will go back and forth between using different conlangs of theirs, or use multiple throughout the entire month. Others might use a single conlang for all 31 days, but make multiple words each day. Some conlangers like to include etymologies for their words, and/or example sentences. Additionally, some people try to make words that fit in with weekly themes that they either decide on themselves or are suggested by the thread. Of course, you can play however you'd like!

Commenting on and taking inspiration from the words others have made is always encouraged! It's been mentioned in previous years that communities of conlangers on various social media platforms also participate in Lexember (in fact, I believe it was started on Twitter), so if you're active elsewhere, you might consider posting your words there, too.

A few years ago, there was an attempt to come up with suggested weekly themes for the entire thread. I'd like to try to do that again this year, although, as I said, these themes would only be suggestions, and no one would be required to follow them. You can interpret the themes however you'd like. I'll be updating this post every Sunday with a new theme.

Weekly Themes:
  • Week 1 (Dec. 1): Singularity
  • Week 2 (Dec. 2-8): Light and Heat
  • Week 3 (Dec. 9-15): Geography and Toponymy
  • Week 4 (Dec. 16-22): Weather, Climate, and the Seasons
  • Week 5 (Dec. 23-29): Body Parts, Kinship Terms, and Personal Names
  • Week 6 (Dec. 30-31): Beginnings, Endings, Changes, Processes, Opportunities, and Time

Here's something for today (from Carpetanian, a conlang presented here)

Word: senheru
Variant forms: senherò (fem. sing.), senhiru (masc. plur.) , senhirò (fem. plur.)

Type: Adjective
Orthography: from O.S. sennero, ultimately from Lat. singulāris "alone, singular"

Definition:
1) unique
2) lone, solitary,

Reminds me of Gosp. Thomas Logion 23:
23. Iesous said, "I shall choose you, one from a thousand and two from ten thousand, and they will stand as a single one."
Any chance we could see this quote translated into Carpetanian?

Lexember 1:

First of all, thanks for opening the thread and also suggesting this particular subject! My conlang, Ancient Vaal, does not formally distinguish between singular and plural, but still needs such words.

Word of the day: salta n the only one

This word is, however, more commonly used adjectivally, which is not too difficult in itself, since nouns in AV can almost always also be used as adjectives. Adjectives used attributively are connected to the head noun by way of the relevant classifier for the head noun; in the following example, this would be "sim" for humans:

Untạn peh salta sim màlan peh ò-şpávó

PST 1sg.ABS only CLF POSS.ERG.friend 1sg.ABS TR.DEF-help

While this could first be assumed to mean "My only friend(s) helped me", it actually does not, since there is a little twist: nouns used as attributive adjectives use an ever so slightly different form if the adjective is non-restrictively, so the above sentence is interpreted exclusively as the adjective "only" restrictively qualifying the head noun "friend". Since - as mentioned above - AV does not distinguish between singular and plural, the intended meaning here would be:

"Only those who helped me are my friends!"

Now on to the non-restrictive meaning of adjectives. This is expressed by using the so-called "possessed" form of a noun (I gloss these forms as "POSS"), formed by simply lengthening the vowel of the stressed syllable. The noun "friend" in the above sentence actually is in the possessed form as well, since the primary use of it is, as suggested by the name, to denote a relationship between possessor and possessed (marked only on the head noun, not the possessor!).

In the below example, "salta" is in the possessed state, i.e., it is used non-restrictively, and the sentence means:

"My only friend(s) helped me"

Untạn peh sālta sim màlan peh ò-şpávó

PST 1sg.ABS POSS.only CLF POSS.ERG.friend 1sg.ABS TR.DEF-help

I will get to how one would express the singularity of the friend being really the "one and only" friend in one of the next posts hopefully ;)

I'm joining with - you guessed it - Yélian.

I'm trying to adhere to the weekly topics - it makes it easier after all. However, when I tried to create an example sentence for the word I originally coined, I found that I had to create two more words! Therefore, the topic word will be published on the 3rd of december. I hope that's okay.

So now for my first lexember entry - Lexember 1st, Yélian:

rédraser [ˈɾedɾasəd̘] - battery

Etymology: redar - electricity + urasa - to spend + machine suffix -er

Example sentence:

Gazaucanan pun manciebolvé vapiyta cîyvalfádakʻi rédrasan vit elisʻi árastag.
company-many-SUP in world-complete nowadays not_anymore-produce-3PL battery-PL REL contain-3PL lead
Most companies in the world nowadays don't produce batteries that contain lead anymore.
Wipe the glass. This is the usual way to start, even in the days, day and night, only a happy one.

I'm going to be joining in, hopefully for the whole month this time. I'll be jumping around within the Takur family.

Lexember 1: Tuo4ken1
ce3nao3pu1 /t͡se˨na͡o˨pu˦/ 'king, absolute monarch, emperor'
from Proto-Takur *déene 'one', + *opódd(é) 'man'
Borrowed into Gízker as tsenaapó 'emperor'

EDIT: Now with example sentence!
Ye1jet3 ho4te3k moe3qo3leŋ1 ži3'e1pak4, heu1'jet3 heo3toe3lak4 hu1, no3 heu1jet3 qao3jar4 ti3nia4'o3pu1 hu1.
3pl.PFV.PST ride city-ALL.s raider-ABS.pl 3pl:3s.DUR.PST sack.CONT 3s.ERG and 3pl:3s.PFV.PST kill king-ERG.s 3s.ERG

The raiders rode into the city, sacked it, and killed its ruler.

:con: griuskant (without the conscript)

ugsaek /'ugsek/ (noun) "orchestra"

It is a music genre that includes anything related to what we refer as orchestra and/or instrumental tracks. Symphonies from classical music, background music, film scores and even hummable themes all count towards using this word in griuskant.
Examples of songs that would be labelled as ugsaek: Summer song - Edward MacDowell, Trouble in town - Assassin's Creed, Fairytale - Shrek, Wild battle - Pokemon ORAS.
