Guess the Word in Romlangs
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
If I'm correct in assuming it's a verb phrase, is cors the direct object?

I don't have much of a basis for this other than the way the word looks, but does it mean "heart", or is it somehow related to Latin cor?Jackk wrote: ↑14 Oct 2019 15:00You are, and it is.shimobaatar wrote: ↑14 Oct 2019 14:58 If I'm correct in assuming it's a verb phrase, is cors the direct object?

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Is it related to Latin corpus? And is pareïr related to Latin parere/parescere?

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Is par- from any prefix in Latin or is it part of the root?
If it's part of the root is it maybe related to or even borrowed from French parader?

It is part of the root, but not related at all to French parader.

Is the -s in cors a plural marker?

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
It is not – it is part of the root.
There is no attested (Classical/Vulgar) Latin verb which is ancestor to pareïr – it is a later derivation.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Makes sense considering the verb ends in -ir (productive ending for deadjectival verbs in Romance). Am I correct in assuming that it's derived simply by adding -ir, making pare- the stem? If so, is the adjective related to French pareil?Jackk wrote: ↑15 Oct 2019 21:52No, an adjective.shimobaatar wrote: ↑15 Oct 2019 21:00 Oh, I missed the bit about cursus above.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Correct on both fronts! (although the stem is actually parei-, the <ï> being originally a ligature of <ii>).Zekoslav wrote: ↑16 Oct 2019 09:37Makes sense considering the verb ends in -ir (productive ending for deadjectival verbs in Romance). Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Now what could that mean... the adjective usually means "equal" or "similar". Is it equalize or something similar? Compare?Jackk wrote: ↑16 Oct 2019 09:46Correct on both fronts! Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
I'd say "equalise" is closer than "compare", but it has rather a specific meaning (which relates to its object cors).

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Not being a native English speaker may get the best of me since my wording may be inexact... assuming cors still means something like 'way', does it mean "to level a road"? Reminds me of what John the Baptist says in the Gospels but it may have a more physical sense here, ofc.
