[cross] The verbal derivation is later than Classical Latin.
Was magrir derived from a word that was present in Classical Latin?

:?: Hmmm, ok

- "become thin" was a sense of this word in the past
- becoming thinner is a result of literally doing one of its modern senses
- it is being used metaphorically in the phrase

Right, but I thought it might help to try to figure out what the typical/literal meaning is first.

Is this "becoming thinner" as in a person losing weight, or as in an object being whittled down, or something else?

Sure [:D] I'll just note that the whole phrase veur a magrir is never used literally. But yeah, it possibly is worth workign out what magrir literally means in the modern sense.

So it's not "starve", "diet", or "exercise". Hmm… does magrir generally have a positive connotation?
