Of course...

Post by Ossicone »

So, I was doing the Conlangery challenge but the story didn't really fit with the Amjati culture. So I modified the story into a little joke of sorts.

:eng: English: I asked, "Why are you hitting your wife?"
He said, "Don't you hit her?"
I said, "Yes, of course. But she's my maid."

:con: Amjati: Eskul zo "Ernaz vrakjatak adomaz kem?"
Neb epa "Nor sjematal etj apja?"
Zeneb "Lja tem ak suram. Tera iliar timaz zem"

Spoiler:

Eskul zo "Ernaz vrakjatak adomaz kem?"

say.PST 3sg.m.ABS "Q do-PRS-2m.m not 3sg.f.ABS"
He said, "Don't you hit her?"

Zeneb "Lja tem ak suram. Tera iliar timaz zem"

When you go back and gloss change the second sentence to formal you. It gets glossed over in English but it's there in the Amjati. [;)]

vy gAizhlon, "iel, swalwiethieth. houdzh za ha-zhafigaarra-vaa."

* 'Kloud' is a pronominal that means 'why'. The interrogative forms of the causative and causal inflections, 'klung' ('because of what') and 'klong' ('for what') would be equally acceptable; the usage would probably vary with dialect/idiolect.

I questioned, "[As for] your wife, you are striking [her] why?"

I said, "Yes, beyond question. But [as for] her, [she] is house-girl of me."

* - nje marks the subject of a sentence in varying degrees of formal speech. Some irregular verbs only use it in some cases and some never use it, and it is often dropped in less formal/familiar speech
** - svu refers to the subject of the sentence, but also can carry certain connotations about it depending on usage. Here it doesn't really hold much other meaning than to stand in for nos as per slightly formal speech
*** - tje here marks possession, it can also mean "personal" as an adjective and in more modern speech has become a 1SGN
**** - k' is an interrogative for simple true/false, yes/no questions.
***** - involving occupation

The "當然啊" here means "of course not". I'd suggest adding a "打" in "當然啊", changing it into ""當然打啊", or use "當然會".

:vie: Vietnamese
Ông hỏi, "Sao đánh đập vợ?"
Chú trả lời, "Ông đánh không?"
Trả lời, "Có chứ. Mà chị là người hầu gái của ông."

older.man ask why hit EMPH wife
man reply older.man hit NEG
reply yes EMPH but woman COP CL maidservant GEN older.man

Do note that this conversation is in a markedly formal register. I pictured this conversation happening among some people in a mansion or something so I wrote it that way. The words glossed man, woman, etc. are the pronouns.
Có chứ would be the 'of course' part. is actually a copula, but it is used to say yes in Vietnamese for a lot of situations. Chứ is the defining word here, it's a somewhat complicated particle used to express that a certain situation is obvious or easily assumed. For instance, if someone walked in on you eating dinner, and they said "Cậu làm gì?" (what are you doing) you could reply "Ăn chứ!" because the plate and everything is right there in plain sight.

It was fun working out the dynamic between the past and distant past here.
The distant past is used to start the story and mark it as an anecdote. Afterwards the 'I said/he said' switch to the regular past. The actual dialogue is in distant past though.
