Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs 2
I should have realized that the meaning of netun would be particularly difficult to guess. I've been trying to think of a hint or something I could say without either giving too much away or making things even more confusing. I don't know how helpful this will be, but this exact semantic shift ("Neptūnus, Neptūnum" > "???") took place in a natural Romance language.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs 2
Anything to do with whelks or snails or other shellfish or cephalopods or Gastropoda?
Anything to do with invertebrate animals?
Anything to do with marine or aquatic animals?
You did say, didn’t you, this thing is some kind of chondrichthyes or cartilaginous fish?
One with jaws?
A shark?
I admit I’m totally at sea!

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs 2
A roman god, that was once the god of rivers, and then the god of the sea.
Derives from accusative singular form, as in roughly and figuratively: "I see Neptunum".
Modifies the word for shark.
Is it just a species of dogfish?

Regarding the phrase as a whole,
I've said this, at least:eldin raigmore wrote: ↑22 Sep 2020 18:48 You did say, didn’t you, this thing is some kind of chondrichthyes or cartilaginous fish?
One with jaws?
A shark?
If I didn't confirm it before, though, the phrase as a whole does refer to a type of shark.
I wouldn't read too much into the particular Classical Latin forms I've been citing. I just chose the nominative singular because it's typically the citation form for CL nouns, and the accusative singular because - from what I understand - inherited nouns (as opposed to those later borrowed directly from Latin) in modern Romance languages, at least Western ones, are typically descended from the accusative singular forms of CL nouns.jimydog000 wrote: ↑22 Sep 2020 19:37 A roman god, that was once the god of rivers, and then the god of the sea.

For anyone who'd like one, I'll be putting a hint here under a spoiler. Hopefully it'll help, but if you find it just makes things more confusing, please feel free to ignore it.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs 2
I tried cheating by looking up all the words derived from “Neptune” in all the modern Romance languages, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to do that on-line.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs 2
The Wiktionary entry for Neptūnus does not mention the modern word I have in mind, but the etymology section of the entry for the modern word I have in mind does mention Neptūnus.eldin raigmore wrote: ↑23 Sep 2020 01:38 I tried cheating by looking up all the words derived from “Neptune” in all the modern Romance languages, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to do that on-line.
Note that, unlike netun, the modern word I have in mind from a natural Romance language has undergone a number of "deformations", so to speak, due to analogy.

TIL French lutin "imp, elf, pixie" comes from Neptunus! So is the phrase some kind of dwarf shark, like a lanternshark?

netun is related to the appearance of this species, not its size or "ferocity", so to speak.
