What I have been working on
Re: What I have been working on
Got a new core vocabulary from a fellow conlanger, that seems to be working out well. So I've broken my word list down into the English word in the first column. Columns 2 through 4 are for present, past, and future tense verb forms. The last column, #5 is for all other parts of speech including the noun form of the verb where needed. So far Shu has 1057 words and counting. Have done a lot of thinking on this conlang and have decided that if you wish to be fluent in it, you can. If you talk like the way the Native American Indians do in those old western movies, you can do that in Shu as well.

No not really, it is just some people's speech is broken and I want them to know they have a home with Shu, just like everybody else. I did not really like the um thing either. I liked how Tanto would ask the Lone Raanger "You want me go to town buy supplies?" heh. Also, it is fully how Tanto would say "heap big wampum" which I never understood. Heap and Big, together makes no sense, since they basically mean the same thing the way he tries to use it. It's like saying big twice.Khemehekis wrote: ↑03 Aug 2021 08:13Heh, I always cringed when the Hollywood Indian characters in movies put -um at the end of every verb. Re: What I have been working on
Well, a lot of people use redundant language. Like why do people say "in the nighttime" when they could just say "in the night"? I also know a lot of people where I live who start sentences with "Ain't nobody" or "Ain't nothing": "Jolene, ain't nobody want to hear you complain!" "Ain't nothing you can do about it".Larryrl wrote: ↑04 Aug 2021 22:37 No not really, it is just some people's speech is broken and I want them to know they have a home with Shu, just like everybody else. I actually knew a man named Don who would ride me around with his son Jeremy (who had MR) and a man with Down's syndrome named Rovaughn. Don would sometimes explain to people that "Rovaughn speaks like an Indian". Of course, he could get away with saying that because Don himself was Cherokee.

Re: What I have been working on
I opened up my language more, by changing my affixes slightly.
Now all vowels may be the first letter of nouns that are made from verbs, not just "A" or "o"

Re: What I have been working on
Also, I added another "A" the A breve to the language, the symbol is the ""Ă" A breve to represent the "æ" sound. Also, I added the "Ŭ" U breve to represent the "ʌ" sound like the "U" in the words "Cup" and "luck" and also the "F-word"
That way I keep opening the language up for more diversity, and all the words do not end up sounding so similar. It has 1538 words and counting. This process is teaching me, that however limited you make the idea of it when you start, that is just how limited it will be to try to create and work with.

Re: What I have been working on
You have /æ/ and /ʌ/ now? Cool, that will increase the number of possible syllables greatly.
1,538? Rock on!It has 1538 words and counting.
I don't normally show interest in personal conlangs -- if it's an artlang I like it to have a fictional or micronational speaker community attached -- but I'll definitely keep following this one because I always love to see what conlangers are doing with the Landau Core Vocabulary!

Re: What I have been working on
Thanks I enjoy the feedback, good or bad. This is not really so much a personal conlang, as it is a possible auxlang, and maybe I might use it in a fictional story I write, or write a complete bilingual fictional short story in it. Show both the Shu, and the English translation. Have the Shu paragraph followed by the English translation, or possibly have the odd numbered pages be Shu, and the even would be English. As far as your "artlang" goes I really do not know what an artlang is I will have to look it up on the internet after a little bit.Khemehekis wrote: ↑07 Aug 2021 03:36You have /æ/ and /ʌ/ now? Re: What I have been working on
To show you how scatter brained I am, I used everthing I thought I could from the "LCV", then I got a list from the internet of the 500 most commonly used English words. You'd be surprised how many of those I did not have yet. So then I went back through the "LCV" and found in there quite a bit of things I had overlooked. My biggest worry is that music in Shu is going to suck. Poems are ok, they do not necessarily have to rhyme. However with lyrics to songs, if it is translated into Shu right, it won't rhyme, but it is written to rhyme, it won't make sense in anyone's natlang.Khemehekis wrote: ↑07 Aug 2021 09:06Nice poem! Just so I have an idea of how much of the LCV you used: How large is your lexicon now?Larryrl wrote: ↑07 Aug 2021 19:23 To show you how scatter brained I am, I used everthing I thought I could from the "LCV", then I got a list from the internet of the 500 most commonly used English words. I don't see why they wouldn't make sense; I can write meaningful rhyming songs in Kankonian. My biggest worry is that music in Shu is going to suck. Re: What I have been working on
What if say two words that rhyme might be words that normally do not go together in the natlang. Example let's say suppose the word for television rhymed with the word for war or something utterly as stupid. The two words even though they rhymed (they don't, but if they did) do not even remotely go together. What's the song going to be about attacking the poor television?Khemehekis wrote: ↑08 Aug 2021 00:12Just so I have an idea of how much of the LCV you used: How large is your lexicon now?Larryrl wrote: ↑07 Aug 2021 19:23 To show you how scatter brained I am, I used everthing I thought I could from the "LCV", then I got a list from the internet of the 500 most commonly used English words. Re: What I have been working on
I am contemplating whether to modify Shu. I have, as stated in previous posts, two consonants for each of my three verb tenses. I have past, present, and future. But, I could cut out a bunch of words, which could be reused, and learning time by just using "HESH" which means "WILL" with the present tense form of the verb. If the reader sees the "HESH", he or she would know that that means the verb is in the past tense. Therefore instead of saying like
LA HAT PAN KI MUD I WILL BE LATE TONIGHT ( THIS NIGHT )
you can say:
LA HESH PAN KI MUD I WILL BE LATE TONIGHT ( THIS NIGHT )
This will totally remove the words "HAT WILL BE", and "HŶT WILL HAVE", as well as most of the future tense verbs, which can then be re-purposed. Instead of the word for will have, followed by the word for been "HŶT KAT" you would just use "HESH BŶT KAT" for will have been. It would certainly reduce the number of language words I have so far, but would make for a better language, I feel. All opinions welcome.

Re: What I have been working on
Currently, I have past present and future tenses. The present tense covers like I walk, or I am walking, so there is the gerund form. Also, the present tense covers the still tense as well. I do however have words for could and should and such that would make the conditional mood. I might be able to do it the way I want, and use the H, and J for maybe more verb forms, or moods or something.Khemehekis wrote: ↑12 Aug 2021 18:24 What are all the verb forms you currently have?

Re: What I have been working on
Do ypou have the imperative? Is going to? Was going to? Would, as in "would later"? Would, as in "would habitually" (Jack would go to the convenience store every Friday)? The imperfect (was trying, was walking, was going, was smiling, was shattering, was eating)? The pluperfect (had tried, had walked, had gone, had smiled, had shattered, had eaten)? A yes/no question marker? A way of forming voices other than active (like if instead of "The cop arrested Mike" you want to say "Mike was arrested by the cop")? A way of saying "let's"? I got my house painted, Sharon got her hair wet, Tom has his eyes closed? Can you say "may" as in "May you live for 100 years!"? Do you want to have evidentials in Shu?Khemehekis wrote: ↑12 Aug 2021 19:36Larryrl wrote: ↑12 Aug 2021 18:33Currently, I have past present and future tenses. I have the words would and may might could, I think I have should as well as could. It's not so much about the verb forms, as it is whether or not to place the word "WILL" before the present tense to make the future tense. I either remove the word "WILL" and keep all 200+ future tense verb words, or remove the 200+ future tense verb words in favor of using "WILL" in front of the present tense form. The same is true for "COULD". I either keep it to make the conditional mood by using only 1 word, or I get rid of it, and make either the "J" or the "H" words I already have to be conditional. If I do keep the words I already have, it just means more words in the language. However, at what cost to the learner. I want SHU to be easy to learn. I am autistic and it has to be something I and others can learn easy.
Most of what you are talking about I have single words in place to cover already, without needing the "H" or "J" verbs I had already created to be future tense. If I put "WILL" in front of the present tense verb, I do not need a special future tense verb because "WILL" automatically makes it future tense. The same with Would and Could. Those three words alone, would eliminate the need for hundreds of extra words with a special beginning letter.
