At https://www.kli.org/chabal/, a few of the members made word request lists for Christmas. Included are a lot of good words that appear on the LCV: "pronoun", "cotton", "sodium", "algae", "edit, revise", "stress, emphasize", "esophagus", "calcium", "marble", "spleen", "pancreas", "absorb". There are also three more recent requests for LCV words: "tap", "be curly", and "plutonium". Check them out and vote up the ones you like!

Klingon has some new words now as a result of translating the play Hamletmachine. One of them is a nod to the Hebrew alphabet.

The Aspies on this board (of which I know of many) might be interested to know that someone at https://www.kli.org/chabal/ has made a request for the stative verb "be autistic/Aspie". If you care to vote it up, I'm just letting you know.

Marc Okrand has revealed 167 new Klingon words at the latest qep'a'!

http://klingon.wiki/En/NewWordsQepa27

Both of my requests made it in. "Disorder, disability, syndrome, condition" became the second-most popular request on the chabal tetlh, and was revealed as HarqIn. This word no doubt honors Tom Harkin, who helped pass the Americans with disabilities Act. "Headphones" can either be DannI' (covers both ears and includes a band across head), or teS HablI' (described as like what Uhura wears). I researched and found out that Dany is a Pakistan-based headphone manufacturer.

None of the words requested in July were included in the update. Apparently, Okrand made his list in June.

We got a number of new chemical elements: aluminum, plutonium, mercury, sodium, titanium, calcium.

Some great puns: monQIv (algae) references Algernon "Algy" Moncrieff of The Importance of Being Earnest. SupDIng (Kronos' equivalent of cotton) is made out of Sup (to jump) and DIng (to spin), as in "Jump down, spin around, pick a bale o' cotton . . ." And ravngI' (furniture) Is Ingvar Kamprad's first name spelt backwards.

A number of other LCV words now have Klingon equivalents: "lawsuit", "to absorb", "esophagus", "mint", "porch", "to be wise", "dollar", "to stress, to emphasize", "seizure (epileptic)", "fair, circus", "oval", "(magic) trick", "scab", "teen, teen-ager, adolescent, youth, young adult", "thyroid", "counter", "lily", "pronoun", "curfew", "protein", "braid", "marble", "to reflect", "gluten", "to be turbulent", "to solve", "date" (as in going out with someone), "vinegar", "athlete", "trapezoid", "parent", "to nod", "sickle", "cream", "adverb(ial)", "to aim", "to be cool", "to tap", "gums", "nightmare", "to blush", "cherry", "pancreas", "common cold", "to be curly", "favor", "to blink", "gland", "Wales", "to be hollow", "to slap", "to be lonely", "RNA", "void", "freckle(s)", "squash/pumpkin", "by the way", "tumor", "drug", "peach/apricot", "dew", "base (alkali)", "spouse", and "spleen".

Thank you, Marc!

In the webcomic “Freefall”, one of the characters says “‘What’s Opera, Doc?’ sounds so much better in Klingon.”.
“What’s Opera, Doc?” is a Warner Bros. cartoon from the late or middle 1950s starring Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny.
Translating it —— or even its one original song —— into Klingon and then performing it, would be a major challenge!

Anyone up to it?

You're welcome!

I also found some words from the 2014 qepHom that weren't already in the Frathwiki Klingon dictionary, so I've added those too. Click on qepHom2014 at the box at the bottom of the 2020 qepHom page.

I tried the various online software translators on Eigill Skallagrimson’s
“My mother told me”
(English to Klingon, ‘cause I don’t know old Icelandic)
and they’re unstable to the point of incomprehensibility.
Can any of them do it? If so, which one? Is there a particular trick to getting a good translation?

The English source I used isn’t standard English; it’s the one most popular on YouTu.be, both from the Assassins’ Creed: Valhalla game, and the TV series “Vikings”.

My mother told me
One day I would buy
Galley with good oars
Sail to distant shores

Stand up high in the prow
Noble barque I steer
Steady course for the haven
Hew many foemen

....

If I just did it myself, manually, how would I know I’ve done it right?

....

By the way all the Turkish translations I’ve found have a lot of trouble with that last line, “hew many foemen”. They always translate it as a question.

Lots of new words at http://klingon.wiki/En/NewWordsQepa28 and http://klingon.wiki/En/NewWordsQepHom2021 .

My request "chromosome" got in at the qep'a'. The word for chromosome is roSmaH -- literally "we lick", a play on roSghaH (DNA), which translates as "he licks", as in the double helix. "X chromosome" is roSmaH bID, and "Y chromosome" is roSmaH pagh.

I also got my question as to whether be'Hom and loDHom can be used to mean "young woman" and "young man", as in the song "Boys Like You", answered at the qepHom. Turns out you just say be' and loD.

Other LCV words that you can now say in Klingon: "pepper (capsicum)", "to splash", "octopus/squid", "Korea", "hippopotamus", "focus (of camera/lens)", "honey", "to edit, to revise", "compound (chemical)", "pattern", "strap", "to scratch", "anemia", "to beep", "cabbage" or "lettuce", "Thailand", "grasshopper", "fin" or "flipper", "cartoon (animated)", "ant", "paragraph", "eclipse", "contact" or "encounter", "tentacle", "to straddle", "loan", "interest (on money)", "autistic", "gill", "hermit", "the Philippines", "ginger", "watermelon", "clam", "apartment", "jellyfish", "to moan, to groan", "to support", "to invest in", "ovary", "zinc", "politician", "unique", "bead", "whale/dolphin", "crab", "pomegranate", "X-ray", "to explore", "martyr", "terrorism", "Vietnam", "nickel", "texture", "nomad", "moss", "lens", "outlet", "prophet", "program" or "schedule", "braces", "spice", "camel", "cannabis", "sibling" "shrimp", "talent", "cobalt", "straight (hair)", "wavy", "petroleum, oil", "llama/alpaca", "blonde", and "bald".

Lots of good requests for new Klingon words are up at the Wish List (chabal tetlh). If you register at kli.org (you can register as a guest for free), you can vote these words up or down. If the word request gets a high enough score, Marc Okrand will introduce a new Klingon word for it at the 2022 qep'a' this July. Last year, the magic number was 40.

Click on the links to vote on these words.

I have a series or sequence of questions inspired by my recent hospital stay.

1. Can tlhIngan Hol distinguish between diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus?

2. Can tlhIngan Hol distinguish between insulin-insufficient diabetes mellitus (type 1) and insulin-insensitive diabetes mellitus (type 2)?

3. Is there a word or phrase in tlhIngan Hol for Diabetic Keto-Acidosis?

… … …

On Earth (many) apes and certain other mammals whose ancestors had to spend winters in Europe go into a “prediabetic” state around the beginning of winter.
The evolutionary advantage of this is that they can remain active enough to forage or hunt for food without actually using up as much of the glucose or other sugars and carbohydrates they have stored.
Such an evolutionary pressure is quite likely to have also occurred in the evolution of Klingons on Chronos/Qonos or however I should have spelled those names.

The exact nature of the prediabetic state, however, seems to me (though I Am Not An Expert) likely to have been an evolutionary dumb-luck accident on real-world Earth.
It’s this.
Metabolizing glucose and turning it into fat, produces no nitrogenous waste like ammonia or hippuric acid or urea or uric acid.
But metabolizing fructose into fat does! Even though it’s an isomer of glucose! At least in great apes (or all apes? or only African great apes?), turning fructose into fat produces urea as a waste product.
So in our prediabetic state we have about 40 (?) times as much urea in our blood as mammals who don’t do any such thing.

That, getting out of hand, is what causes Diabetic Keto-Acidosis. Do Klingons get DKA?

(I can’t remember how, but i seem to recall that this is related to the process that our ancestors got good at at the cost of any ability to make our own Vitamin C. It seems both evolutions happened where fruit could be found at the relevant time of year, which supplied plenty of both fructose and Vitamin C.)

… … …

Klingons are mammal-equivalents. They’re probably also ape-equivalents and great-ape equivalents. I don’t see how they could be equivalents of African great apes, nor even how that question could be relevantly asked about them.

But they or their ancestors probably need or needed some way to metabolize fructose at some point in their evolution; and they probably still need Vitamin C, even if their bodies can make enough for themselves.

… …

Does tlhIngan Hol have a way to say “prediabetic”?
