Canoe

In my search for a romanized transliteraton of סירת קנו (which is supposed to be canoe) for a video of wacky linguistic quackery, I thought maybe I'll get results here and make a translation challenge out of it. As an aside, I'm vaguely disappointed there's no flag that's corresponds to "languages of the Pacific".

Would you say canoe's an accurate translation of that? Since it looks like there's two words there, would I actually need both and if not would qano be the noun?

סירת קנו literary means "canoe boat", but I have never seen קנו used on its own, probably because it would not be comprehensible that way. However, it is not a frequent word in Hebrew, so I can't really know. Maybe in some specific context קנו is used as a stand-alone word.

In polish it is kanu (pronounced /ka'nu/).

Was going to follow the normal translation thread format (copy+paste-esque) but my conlangs don't actually have a word for "canoe" yet. I mean, I know that the source word will be "kanoa" for the sake of ease but it depends on when the word enters the language. For example, if the word turns up after all of the languages divided it would likely be either <kanu> or <kanua> (/kanu/ or /kanua/) in each language since they all generally allow this word phonemically. However, if the word was adopted before the north-south split then the words appear as:

Standard Southern and Eastern Southern: <kanua> (both /kanua/)
Western and Northern Southern: <kanoo> (the first having /kɛa:nɔu:/ and the second having /ka:nou:/)
"N"-Southern (so named due to its historical nasal vowels): <kanua> (/kanua/)
Standard Northern: <kanuo> (/kanuo/)
Border Northern (so named because it has a number of features found in southern languages): <kanıı> (/kanɯ:/)
"Green" Northern (a distant northern language named after it being slightly more southern): <kaanoa> (/ka:noa/)
"White" Northern (a distant northern language named after it being slightly more northern): <keanoa> (/keanoa/)

If the word was originally borrowed as /kanu/ before the north-south split then the words would be different again:

Standard, Eastern, Western and Northern Southern: <kanu> (first two have /kanu/, the third has /kɛa:nu:/ and the fourth has /ka:nʏ:/)
"N"-Southern: Likewise has <kanu> (/kanua/)
Standard Northern: <kanu> (/kano/)
Border Northern (so named because it has a number of features found in southern languages): <kana> (/kana/)
"Green" Northern (a distant northern language named after it being slightly more southern): <koonuu> (/ko:nu:/)
"White" Northern (a distant northern language named after it being slightly more northern): <keanu> (/keanu/)

So I've got potential words in each of the languages but it depends on exactly when they were borrowed as to what their modern forms would be.

You can tell the same lie a thousand times,
But it never gets any more true,
So close your eyes once more and once more believe
That they all still believe in you.
Just one time.

Fun fact: in Swedish it's kanot /ka"nu:t/ with a pronounced /t/ due to false pronunciation of the French canot /kano/.

Also Yačay256 please read the forum sticky.

Colzie, I can understand the mistake I made with Quechua, for that my apologies, but you took out the translation for my conlang all together. Seriously? :-(

EDIT: I see now that you didn't even give a translation for the word. So amend my PM accordingly.

That's strange because it was there when I previewed before submitting. Perhaps there's a bug. I'll keep a closer eye after submitting from now on.

As for Makurungou, I shall fix that and add Rudan (which I like a lot :-D ).
