Anyone else learning Gaelic?

Post by HolyHandGrenade! »

English speaker looking to practice/ask questions/explore cool things about Scottish Gaelic. I am learning on Duolingo (currently midway through section 2)

When I saw this, I thought you meant Irish Gaelic, and thought, "Salmoneus is learning Gaelic! You can talk with him!"

Then I read it and discovered you meant Scottish Gaelic. Don't know of anyone here who's learning that.

Well, you'd have known if it had been Irish Gaelic, because I would have written up a paragraph about how I thought I could help but knew I probably couldn't, which then ventured into philosophical introspection (somigos?) about self-reporting and how a desire to be helpful can cause even the least self-confident person to overstate their abilities. But not even putting myself under the illusion that I know anything about Scottish Gaelic, I left the thread responseless.

Old Irish here, but I keep an eye out for other Celtic languages.

I think Irish & Scottish Gaelic are very similar though. Looks like they both have palatized consonants. Half the reason for this post is just to complain about having to pronounce /ɾʲ/ anyway.
