How do I make good grammar

Post by Kijetesantakalu042 »

Every time I try to make grammar I never can make anything that is able to communicate complex thoughts. The furthest I've gotten when making grammar are clauses and basic "x does y to z" sentences.

Does anyone know how to get better at making grammar?

I personally haven't gotten quite good at writing a grammar, but I think for me what helped me was getting the general structure down, and then making it 'construction oriented'. So for example my grammar right now has the basic structure below
  • Phonology
  • Morphology
  • Syntax
    • Nominal Syntax
    • Verbal Syntax
    • Sentential Syntax
But in the nominal/verbal syntax part, I go in depth on describing individual nouns that have strange or unusual. Verbal syntax will talk about particular epistemic/aspectual meanings or collocations that certain verbs may have. Sentential syntax might talk in detail about complementizers and relative clauses (although I will admit, usually those two later sections get neglected since I only update the Grammar for relays) etc.

That isn't exactly my issue but thanks for the insight!

I would say don’t rush it, get to those parts when you get to them. Research different types of clauses so you know the difference, and remember: not every language allows every type of clause. For example, some languages don’t have a comparatives or relative clauses.
