Descriptive aspects are used to establish setting or background (this example in particular uses the "stative" aspect, since the attribute of "walking" is not inherent to to the subject, but rather just something they happened to be doing at the time), while eventive aspects (this example uses the "perfective" to show a single, marked event with cohesive boundaries) are used for more salient changes and progressions.

If the falling of the branch is the high point or climax of whatever narrative the speaker was relating, the stronger punctual aspect could also be used:
