Has anyone of you made an actual dictionary?

I guess lexiconal size would be the major issue here, but has anyone of you ever made a (paper) dictionary? It seems like a cool thing to make/do/own, but on the other hand quite a hassle.

I might try something, but just to get some sort of idea ('cause I am yet to exceed a thousand words).

You mean a conlang-english dictionary or a conlang-conlang dictionary? (The latter is much more ambitious.) If he really wanted to I'm pretty sure Khemehekis could make a Kankonian one if he really wanted to. As for mine they're far too puny and pathetic to make such an endeavor worthwhile.

Conlang-english, I suppose, and english-conlang.
If by conlang-conlang you mean a monolingual dictionary (i.e. with definitions), then yes, that would be even more ambituous. (It would be more ambitious if that's not what you meant as well.)

I suppose I could always print out any of my online conlang dictionaries, but I prefer having the ability to search my dictionary with the click of a mouse. For example: http://fiziwig.com/conlang/basata/show_lex.php

My lexicons usually top out at around 600 - 800 words by the time I lose interest in the language and move on, so that's not much of a book. More like a lexicon leaflet.

Some words, like "figure", "point" and the prepositions, have an awful lot of meanings. If we use 12-point print, any idea how thick such a dictionary would be?

Probably about as big as a regular English reference dictionary. I think regular dictionaries contain 40k-60k words.


As for the original question:
I worked on the lexicon for an endangered natlang, but it was definitely not printed.
To be honest, I think my Inyauk lexicon is more impressive.

My lexicons aren't big enough. Anyway, I'm always adding to them, so a dictionary would get very quickly out of date (although I suppose once the lexicon reached a certain size I would have to add to it less often).

I have actually transcribed several versions of Qatama into books, but they are all trash now. I have begun the process with Kala and intend to 'finish' more so than I ever did with Qatama.

I actually sent a hand-transcribed dictionary of Qatama to langlover, a former member of this board and the ZBB. I doubt he still has it.

On the ZBB site, there's a thread about using the publishing company and Amazon Books to create printed and bound copies of a book, if you create one... They only print on demand, so there are no extra printing fees.

It was actually a West African language - Medumba. (Pronounced /mə̀ʤɨ́mbà/)
I worked on it for my Field Methods class, back when I was in school. I found the old file so here you go:

It would feel like a wasted effort, since you'll keep on adding words to the language after the lexicon is printed, and maybe even changing some of the ones in the dictionary.

I suppose printing a book would be for people who are very confident in their dictionary. And who says you can't publish multiple editions? You can let the changes build up over time and then change it all at once. :D

I made a dictionary, but it´s just Vanya-German and it´s as a PDF.

I just gave making a dictionary an(other) try, and I have determined that MS Word is a WHORE. But I guess I still have to use it.

The problem was that you can only sort things alphabetically, that is, using the roman alphabet. So I am going to use hidden text to add a romanised version in front of the actual lemma, and sort the list on that word.

@SLiV: Try OpenOffice.org, it is free and far more customizable.

In my Pingÿgo dictionary (Only in ODT format so far), I organize all the terms in the following hierarchy: Class of root in lemma form; root; new roots from blends based on said root. The more morphemes in a term and the type of morphemes (e.g. bound vs. free, position in slot) in the term determine how far under its root it goes.
