Language practice thread
Re: Language practice thread
Bien. Moi, j'écrirais.
Well. I'd write.
J'ai besoin de pratiquer beaucoup.
I need a lot of practice.

Oh, right. I forgot that the pronouns have special accusatives.CrazyEttin wrote:Fixade.Skógvur wrote:Tapan teidät.xinda wrote::roc: 如果不想寫會怎麽樣?Skógvur wrote: Write!

Hungarian uses -t as its accusative everywhere, by the way. Cognates? :3

Några andra har också trott så, men teorin är inte allmänligt accepterad. Den samma ändelsen finns också i det finska ordet "ny-t".Skógvur wrote:Oh, right. I forgot that the pronouns have special accusatives.CrazyEttin wrote:Fixade.Skógvur wrote: Tapan teidät.

Some others have also thought so, but the theory is not commonly accepted. The same ending also appears in the Finnish word 'nyt 'now''.

Why is there a reason not to view 'nyt' as a single root rather than *ny- with an ending?Omzinesý wrote:Några andra har också trott så*, men teorin är inteSkógvur wrote:Oh, right. I forgot that the pronouns have special accusatives.CrazyEttin wrote:Fixade.Skógvur wrote: Tapan teidät.

Re: Language practice thread
Jag kommer inte ihåg. Det är länge sen när jag läste det någonstans. Men jag tror det är (inte den?)samma rot som i adjektiven/substantiven "nyky-" (nykyaika, nykyään... 'nuförtiden') (nykyt > nyɣyt > ny:t > nyt (> ny))Skógvur wrote: Why is there a reason not to view 'nyt' as a single root rather than *ny- with an ending?
I don't remember. It's long ago when I read it somewhere. But I think it is the same root as the adjective/noun "nyky" (modern time, nowadays..)
En muista. Siitä on pitkä, kun luin sen jostain. Mutta luulen, että se on sama juuri kuin adjektiivissa/substantiivissa "nyky-"

Oh. '*ny:t' is interesting, since it's 'nüüd' in Estonian.Omzinesý wrote:Jag kommer inte ihåg. Det är länge sedanSkógvur wrote: Why is there a reason not to view 'nyt' as a single root rather than *ny- with an ending?

Re: Language practice thread
Yep, which is why I am not an advocate of writing the words together.
1. It's not pronounced the way writing them together implies.
2. It is a preposition and a noun.

What about én > engem, te > téged, etc.?Skógvur wrote:Oh, right. I forgot that the pronouns have special accusatives.
Hungarian uses -t as its accusative everywhere, by the way.
Re: Language practice thread
That's some weird mix of root + g + personal suffix, it looks like. I don't know the etymology, though, but most forms of all pronouns are formed with the personal endings.Theta wrote:What about én > engem, te > téged, etc.?Skógvur wrote:Oh, right. Re: Language practice thread
I was just saying, because it seemed like you were giving Hungarian as an opposition to Finnish's irregular accusatives in the pronouns, when Hungarian's are also irregular.
Re: Language practice thread
Oh, right. Once again I forgot that Finnish actually has -t in the pronouns. Shouldn't that only serve to strengthen the cognate theory?Theta wrote:I was just saying, because it seemed like you were giving Hungarian as an opposition to Finnish's irregular accusatives in the pronouns, when Hungarian's are also irregular.
Re: Language practice thread
Unless I misunderstand you here, you're implying there is personal agreement on the verb? Swedish lacks this, kommer is present tense for all persons, and kom is the respective past tense form.Lambuzhao wrote:Edit: jag kom; {he, she,it} kommer

Maybe he's been peeking at Icelandic (ég kem; þú/hann kemur).
Re: Language practice thread
I have just been to a little coffeehouse here, that's called the language café, to ask whether I could get an employment there. The boss said that they have no need for anyone new, but that I could still write an email to them, so I have just done that now. I couldn't tell her much when I was there, because we spoke for barely a minute; I think she was very busy, as they were working and I had just come without having said anything beforehand, so now I'm hoping that she will read my letter and want me despite this short meeting.
