Book recomendations topic
Yeah. I thought it'd be useful to post book recomendations on conworlding, conlanging, and linguistics here.
A Practical Introduction to Phonetics, by J. C. Catford
One of the first books I'd recommend to a beginner, this book teaches you phonetics -- and more importantly, how to pronounce all the sounds you hear. You'll learn all the things you need to know to pronounce sounds from phonetic descriptions, and how to read IPA.
The Languages of Native North America, by Marianne Mithun
A broad overview of the American Indian languages of North America, particularly in Canada and the US. If you're interested in polysynthetic languages, this is one of the books you should pick up.

Re: Book reccomendations topic
Maybe this would fit in the resources thread?
Edit: ressources -> resources

Yeah, I was thinking something similar. That would work, right?Creyeditor wrote:Maybe this would fit in the ressources thread?
Does that work for you? Are written descriptions of how to pronounce a sound enough to teach you to be able to pronounce that sound? That's quite a gift!cntrational wrote:You'll learn all the things you need to know to pronounce sounds from phonetic descriptions,

I think Ear of the Sphinx thought you were making a joke on the misspelling of "recommendations" in the thread title (at least, that's what I thought when I first noticed how you'd spelled "resources" - I was not aware that it was spelled like that in German).Creyeditor wrote:Fuck those words, that act as if they were internationally identical in orthography.Ear of the Sphinx wrote:I see what you did herre.Creyeditor wrote:Maybe this would fit in the ressources thread?

speling sux
Yeah. The book doesn't focus on the final sound, which varies by environment, language, and speaker, but rather on the physical articulator positions required -- in fact, I would avoid listening to recordings at first. Furthermore, phonetic descriptions like "palatal" or "lateral" are based on articulation and not sound, so you'll have to learn them anyway if you want to understand how phonetics works.shimobaatar wrote:Does that work for you? Re: Book recomendations topic
I just meant I can't personally read a description of how a sound is articulated and then make myself carry out that articulation. I'd have to have a live, x-ray video feed of my mouth/face.

Re: Book recomendations topic
The book has a lot of exercises that train you into getting control over your articulators.

If you say so. I can't really buy it.cntrational wrote:The book has a lot of exercises that train you into getting control over your articulators.
