Updating (to get the thread back on topic)

Alias(es): Arayaz, Avoca
Location: My profile says nothing more than "just south of the pin-pen merger," but it's probably out of the bag by now that I live in LA. No, not that LA, the other LA. The one with the pin-pen merger. (Louisiana)
Date of birth: September 7, 2010
Gender: Male
Occupation: Student
Interests: Conlanging, obviously. Aside from that, I sail keelboats (I-20s to be specific), currently only in a summer camp but going to do an after-school thing once I'm 14. I want to start a garden, but don't have room ─ in two weeks or so I might be able to. Worldbuilding and writing are fun, but I'm not as good at them.
Favorite music: A wide variety.
Political ideology: Idk, somewhere to the left, politics don't make sense
Religion: Jewish, though my belief is more in line with atheist/agnostic. My worldview is weird, and it doesn't match with anything I've heard of so far.
Conlangs: Urjafwa and Hánásö are my best conlangs. All of my others are bad: Laakitlantu is a bit unorganized and a bit unnatural. Iyamri is badly documented. Kperı is bad, I don't know. Yoshó is chaotic and basically Latin with Spanish's phonology. Śkalaźwë, which is fun to say, isn't bad, in general, but very incomplete. Aodyëi is not very good, and also not very complete. The Thakina languages are messed-up and uninteresting. Shelik is disorganized and has some pretty inexcusable sound changes (ehm ... e → ɜ → o). Kachüdj is Old English recreated by someone who didn't know how Old English worked. Ăsă is Ăsă, which is an insult by itself. Näzyuva is arbitrary and unnatural. Kuana is boring. Yja’ûn is a kitchen sink. Hîmnà is terrible, and possibly less natural than the stuff online conlang generators might generate, except its phonemic inventory, which is literally English minus a few sounds.
Natlangs: I can read Portuguese *almost* fluently, write it less so, speak it less than I write it, understand it even less. Currently learning Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and being frustrated by Pinyin. Also have dabbled in Irish, Indonesian, Finnish, etc.
Other hobbies: Aside from what I've mentioned above, I play some Magic: The Gathering, I do capoeira, and I play D&D. I also occasionally play various video games, but I'm terrible at them, so.
Where do you see yourself in ten years? Who knows? I guess I'd be in college.

A little over 3 years on, let's see how things have gone:

To anyone new to the CBB, hello, I'm one of the Moderators. Welcome to the Board, if you've not been welcomed already. Hope you have a nice time

Alias(es): Sangi39

Location: Darlington, County Durham, UK (recently moved from North Yorkshire)

Date of Birth: August 2nd 1989

Gender (or "sex" if you prefer): Male

Sexuality: Bisexual

Marital Status: Single

Education: BA Archaeology 2:1

Occupation: Working in fraud prevention for a gift card / voucher company (which I have actively said to people is a scam, haha, but unfortunately it pays)

Political Ideology: Libertarian Communist - 3 years ago I said "socialist", 4 years prior to that I'd said "social democrat", and, honestly, I've fallen back into libertarian/council communism that I was in favour of back when I was just leaving university in 2010. It's been a journey [:P]

Religion: None, weak atheist - This honestly very rarely changes much at all. I don't believe in "a god" or "gods". I wasn't raised with that sort of belief (apparently my dad tried to take me out of assembly in primary school, because what's with the praying and hymns and stuff? But the school said no. Only learned that recently), although through a couple of funerals I learned that my favourite grandparent (I mean at this point two were dead and I hadn't seen the third since I was six, but whatever) did regularly attend church, and used to play the organ there, which was a surprise, because it was literally never mentioned. I honestly would have enjoyed the chance to have known that, and had a discussion about things (I can only assume that my dad's choice early on was the one that won out). But again, yeah, weak atheist

Interests: As always, conlanging, linguistics, history, sociology, anthropology, history, astronomy, calendars. Over the last few years I've tried to learn things that are more mechanical, like how clocks, and car engines, and things like that work. Big hope over the next year or two is to make a working mechanical clock (we'll see how that goes)

Favorite Music: Metal... Black, Death, Groove, Thrash, Doom, Folk, Symphonic, but nothing like Iron Maiden or Metallica and I'm not a huge fan of Black Sabbath either (they're the three bands people have said "oh, like..." most often when I say "Metal"). I also like NDH and NFH, Industrial Metal and even some industrial music in general as well as SOAD and RATM. Same as always

Favourite TV Show(s): Firefly and Star Trek: The Next Generation definitely, but I don't think I really watch anything that regularly any more. Also things like Community and Brooklyn 99, oh and The Good Place too

Favourite Film(s): Star Wars: Episode IV (can't really go wrong with it), Serenity. I had said Marvel last time, but the saturation is just bleh

Favourite Book(s): I almost exclusively read non-fiction (relating to my interests above), but I love Terry Pratchett's Discworld books (favourites being the Death books and the Watch books) and some of Neil Gaiman's stuff as well. It took me over a year to read The Shepherd's Crown by Terry Pratchett because I didn't want it to end.

Natlang Education: GCSEs in Russian (a*) and German (b) (now watch as I remember a total of two words of each [:P]), some Welsh in primary school in southern Wales and two years of French in high school alongside German

Favourite Natlang(s): Possibly Old Norse, Faroese and Icelandic as well as Finnish.

Favourite Conlang(s): Purely on the basis of its amazing script, Naduta [:)] Sal's Rawang Ata also seems pretty cool, oh, and Ahzoh's Vrkhazhian

Conlangs: As is always the case, massively behind on the languages of Yantas, but that's still my main project. I always have new ideas, but I can never seem to throw them at paper

Where do you see yourself in ten years?: As always, I don't know. I graduated almost fifteen years ago now, and don't see a way into archaeology any more, not as a job. I think at this point, the work relating to fraud that I do will be my next step (hell, it's helped with moderating on this board, so it has some transferrable skills), but how I can move forward, I have no idea. One of my friends, working at a bank, suggests something in banking? But... eh. I mentioned in a recent "self-review" (eurgh) meeting with my immediate "superior" (supervisor? line manager? I have no idea) that I don't really see this job as something that I want to do long-term, but I don't know where else I'd go. Interestingly... they had the same response
You can tell the same lie a thousand times,
But it never gets any more true,
So close your eyes once more and once more believe
That they all still believe in you.
Just one time.

I have..... changed........

Alias(es): Just Arayaz! I have achieved online username unity!
Location: New Orleans
Date of birth: September 7, 2010
Gender: Female (transgender)
Sexuality: Lesbian
Occupation: Student
Interests: Conlanging, worldbuilding, music, writing, art.
Favorite music: Billy Joel (fav: Prelude/Angry Young Man), REM (fav: Daysleeper), AJR (fav: Yes I'm A Mess), Dream Theater (fav: Pull Me Under).
Political ideology: Socialist? I think??
Religion: Atheist (raised Jewish)
Conlangs: The four Peninsular Areyaxi languages (NE Areyaxi, Ayayaxi, Lhạrre, and Arežaw), as well as Ruykkarraber and Izre.
Or, for old time's sake:
Spoiler:
The Areyaxi languages, Ruykkarraber, and Izre are my best conlangs. Odmeljär, Goidheug, and 2c2ef0 exist, but not for much longer. All of my others are bad: Ayą is Indonesian except more vowels. Yolo has bad sound changes. Urjafwa is a bad polysynthetic language. Hánásö is weird, but not in a good way. Laakitlantu is a bit unorganized and a bit unnatural.
Natlangs: I can do okay Portuguese and Spanish, though I quit Duolingo as protest against their new AI usage and halting course expansion. I'm "learning" some Tibetan out of a used textbook I bought, though I'm not too far into it. Lovin the script though.
Favorite Books: Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch and This Is How You Lose The Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
Other hobbies: Aside from what I've mentioned above, I do (wishful thinking about my doing) sailing and (wishful thinking about my doing) gardening. And I'm a speedrun world record holdler!! (for a category with two runners including me)
Where do you see yourself in ten years? Who knows? I guess I'd be in college.

Ho, boy. I've told the story twice on this board before, but both threads were pruned. So here's my story . . .

Back in the nineties, I subscribed to a magazine that existed at the time called Simpsons Illustrated. SI had comic strips dealing with the Simpsons characters and such stuff. A recurring feature was various Simpsons characters' "Top 40" or "Bottom 40" lists, cataloguing their favorite and least favorite things. On Ned Flanders' Top 40, for instance, were "That heady mix of politics and religion" and "Traditional American Family Values". On Principal Skinner's Bottom 40 were such things as "Whoever keeps drinking from my flask" and "Student assistants who turn bad".

I decided to create my own such list, "James Landau's Bottom 40". On it were such items as "Forgetting why I entered a room", "People who worship hygiene as if it were a god", and "Genetics lessons that teach about brown eyes and blue eyes but forget about those of us with hazel eyes". One of the items on my list was "People who forget the existence of bisexuals". I passed the list around to my family members to read.

While my sister 11-year-old sister Liz, who had just gotten her ears pierced that day, was watering the garden, I asked her what she thought of that list. She said, "Well, I don't understand what 'People who forget the existence of bisexuals' means".

"'Bisexual' means someone's attracted to both males and females", I said. "Like they're both straight and gay at the same time."

"Are you bisexual?", she asked.

I didn't know what to say. Silence.

Liz figured out from my silence that I did indeed swing both ways. "Ewwwww!", she said. "That is the grossest thing I have ever heard of! I'm telling Mom that you're bi!"

Liz also said, "How can you think, 'Girls are cute, guys are cute'?", and "What can I do to convince you to be straight?"

I never heard her tell my parents, nor did I ever hear my parents confront me about it.

Several months later, while I was seeing my psychologist, a man from the Greatest Generation named Dr. Kirk, he said, "And you'll see that it's not only a world of people, but a world of women".

"And also a world of men?", I asked. "Because I'm bisexual?"

"Oh yes", said Dr. Kirk. Your parents told me at their meeting with me that you told your sister you think you're bisexual".

My parents and psychologist had had a three-person meeting several months before. After that meeting with Dr. Kirk, my father had told mne, "We'll always love you no matter what, James, no matter what". When he said that, I had no idea what he meant. It wasn't until years after Dr Kirk told me about my parents informing him of my bisexuality at the aforementioned appointment that I made the connection.

I always think it was statistically anomalous that my Boomer mother and Silent father were more accepting of my bisexuality in the nineties than my Millennial sister. In a few years, though, Liz changed her mind, as she was a member of the Gay/Straight Alliance at her high school when it formed during her years there. (I also joined the GSA at my own high school, which formed at around the same time.) And I remember how she wanted a Tinky-winky when some restaurant was doing Teletubbies happy meals!
